Undiagnosed lower lateral flank pain/spasms
I have occasional attacks over the years that were originally diagnosed as kidney stones, but was never able to retrieve one. They were often very painful and a couple of times sent me to the ER, although probably the pain was not as bad as a full on kidney stone attack.
Several years later my current doctor feels these were generally not kidney stones because of no blood detected in urine, at least for most of the episodes. He sent me several years ago for some lower intestinal tests, at least I think that was the specialist, but these were also unrevealing.
The attacks are slow in onset, building over a couple of hours, with a dull pain that starts in the lateral lower back and then accompanied by an odd sensation in my lower lateral groin of the same side, always the right side I think. The pain seems to fill from back to front of the lateral lower back and top of hip of my right side.
Currently both my doctor and I think these are spasms in my autonomic nerve or smooth muscle systems. IMPORTANT INFO - masturbating to powerful orgasm brings pretty immediate relief. The pain subsides quickly! So we think somehow the orgasm is like pushing a restart button.
Any guesses on diagnosis? And also on alternative treatment (as I get older orgasm is harder to achieve and sometimes difficult to find a secluded area).
I'm wondering about trying a TENS unit. Any other ideas?
