broken wrist and swelling after cast removal

I broke the two forearm bones right above my wristbone 5 weeks ago. Yesterday the cast was removed and the pin that was inserted in the bone was removed. I am wondering if it is normal to have swelling in my wrist, hand and fingers. Thanks.

Re: broken wrist and swelling after cast removal

Hi..are you in a type of cast at this point? or is it wrapped, etc?
Is this after you got up? Sleeping can cause settling of fluid. Consider to have your arm somewhat raised on a small pillow that offers good support, etc

I think you should call the doc's office and have him call you just so that he knows and that you are clear on the rest of the healing process.

I know there will be some swelling for a while, but again...I don't know how much you have or how much you're using it, etc.

Re: broken wrist and swelling after cast removal

Yes, I do have a velcro splint which has good support of my arm, but the swelling occurs when my arm is hanging by my side during the day. I called the doctor and he said simply to elevate it, but that is a little hard to do when I can't always sit and elevate. I guess I will have to find a way, though. Thanks for your suggestion--you were right on target with the doctor.

Re: broken wrist and swelling after cast removal

You could wear it in a sling with the wrist higher during the day. That would keep it elevated while you are moving aobut. When you are seated, I owuld keep it on a pillow on the arm of the sofa/chair whatever you are sitting in.

Yes, I too agree with the sling...that and the pillow whenever you're sitting.

Good you called the doc!
It takes time to heal...as well, make sure your salt intake isn't too high and that you're drinking enough water throughout the day.

Keep us posted how you're doing!
