I have had a pretty bad sore throat for about 3 weeks now. It started w/an overall sick feeling, fever, slight earache, and tiredness. After a few days I went to the doctor and received an antibiotic & a prescription gargle-liquid. I couldn't use the gargle very long (it made my mouth burn horriblly), but after I took the antibiotics a few days later I thought I was getting better. I took the complete dose. However, just as it seemed to be getting better...it came back. I had a worse sore throat accompanied by an earache (feeling of fluid/fullness in one ear all the time). That lasted several days, but eventually the earache did get better. It is almost gone now although I don't seem to be hearing as well out of that ear as I did before. I've been taking OTC pain meds and lots of throat drops. My sore throat is not better. It is tolerable, but uncomfortable all the time. My tongue is now very sore in the back as well. There appear to be many big raised areas/bumps in the back of my tongue, but I cannot see it very well. It hurts a lot. It hurts to swallow. It is especially bad in the morning, but it hurts all day. My throat hurts worse now than it used to but I cannot see any white patches or obvious problem the way I could before I sent to the doctor the first time. I'm afraid if I go again I'll get told its not a big deal (that was sort of what he told me last time). The strep test came back negative last time. He gave me the antibiotic though anyway. I just don't know what could cause a sore throat to last this long. It hurts all the time, but when I look in my throat I can't see any obvious big problem except the sore/bumps on the back of my tongue. I really don't know what to do with it. Any ideas? Thank you
Are you seeing an ENT doctor. It doesn't sound like the doctor you are seeing now is doing you any good. Good luck to you. I'm looking for a good ENT now to help with my ears. I have tinnitus (ringing ears) and hopefull he can drain some of the fluid. Sinus drainage makes my throat sore off and on. I tried antibiotic from my dr. and the were worthless.
You really need to see an ENT...you could actually have an abcess in your throat that did not get better with the antibodics and the fact that you feel that you can not hear as well out of one of your ears also means that a specialist needs to be consulted.
Let me know how you are doing.

As with the other posters, ENT is the way to go, but just one thought, the soreness at the back of the tongue could also be caused by the use of throat drops!
There is a brand in the UK of medicated throat lozenges and although they are very good, if I use them for more than a two or three days, they do irritate the area of the tongue and mouth where they are in constant contact....
But, as the name implies, ear nose and throat are all connected and so an infection can cover all areas. Get well soon
I think you may have been right about the throat drops. I actually thought of that too after re-reading my post. Good news is that my sore throat has gotten better. I was going to doctor last Friday if it hadn't, but it got better early last week. I kept trying to treat the throat, but as the earache came back I started treating that instead. That seemed to be much more effective so I kept treating the earache. I had some OTC holistic ear drops and I used them for days and as my earache got better, my hearing got better, and my throat improved too. Since all that stuff is connected I guess I just needed to focus more on the ear and less on the throat. It seemed to work out alright. I feel okay now and that 4-week long-lasting sore throat is finally gone. My ear is better too (and my tongue is back to normal too).
