It can vary a lot, although with a minor injury the swelling should start to go down within a few days. Have you had it checked out? Is it very painful?

Re: foot sprain, how long does swelling last

It is the wife. She tripped in the garden. We did all the usual things, iced water etc. There was no redness, but it started swelling after about an hour. It is still swollen today. If it does not improve by tomorrow she will get it checked at the hospital. She has it wrapped up in an elasticated bandage.

I don't think it is broken. I should imagine it would be difficult to break those bones without something dropping on them or crushing them.

It is very painful but it is a generalised rather than a local swelling.

Actually, you can break foot bones in a simple fall, so, yeah, get it checked out if not improving.
