Finger Injury

Hello all,

2 years ago I wanted to start BJJ / wrestling ( after watching the UFC / Pride and the Gracies etc ) so I joined a gym where they offer a ground fighting class which is kind of a mixture between wrestling and bjj or catch wrestling if you will.
anyways it all going good for like 9 months, then on my last training day before going on vacation I felt some kind of tingling in my lift ring fnger after training. I thought nothing of it and just went home. after a lil while the finger became real sore. and I cannot even train anymore because of it ( boxing is good just no grappling ).

my finger is not swollen.
not disfigured.
not discoloured.

basicly it just looks like it has always looked and just like the rest of my fingers.
I can do everything with it and no motion makes it hurt or anything so in that sense its all normal.

the problem is. whenever something or someone gives a little tick on the top of my finger (right side only) / or pressed on / against it , it feels like an elephant just stepped on that finger. it hurts so bad sometimes it feels like someone stabbed me in the finger ... it goes down a little downwards in my finger too.
I went to the doctor obviously and he sended me to the hospital who did a check up and came to the conclusion that its nothing big and since my finger looks fine and can do everything normally I should just wait it out it will most likely dissapear on its own.

well we're a year further now and the pain is still there whenever something ticks on that finger or presses on that finger. its really annoying. I can go a long time without noticing anything and then try to get some money out of my jeans and hit my fingr against an button or something and it hurts or press my finger against the car seat handle to put it back and its hurts. and obviously I cant train like that either.

anyone knows if this is a grappling injury ? and if so what can I do against it.
grappling isnt big at all here so I guess if its a grappling in jury my doctor will never find out.
I already made plans to go visit a second doctor now to see if he can find something.

any answers are appreciated
thnx in advance

Gee

Re: Finger Injury

Hi!

I don't know anything about a grappling injury, but have you asked your doctor about nerve compression causing the pain? It sounds like a nerve problem. The ulnar nerve runs from the elbow down to your pinky and ring finger so maybe that is it?? That's all I can think of. Hope you get it figured out. It's frustrating not to know what is wrong!

yeh it really is. thnx for the help. someone said it might be carpal tunnel syndrome but I read online that pain is not usually a sympthom of carpal, numbness is and I dont have that.

but indeed my doctor said it is most problably a nerve compression but he said he cant do anything about it. he said he'd have to slice open half my hand and then maybe still find nothing. which ofcourse isnt great either who knows the guy might actually damage more nerves instead of healing the messed up one.

Re: Finger Injury

while it could very well be something affecting the ulnar(also the c8 nerve in the c spine) it could also possibly be stemming where it actually starts, way up in your c spine area and not actually "in" the finger itself? by the way,the median nerve is what becomes affected with CT syndrome, that would not correlate to the last two fingers. the ulnar does. while you do not actually have a c 8 vertebrae, you DO have that c 8 nerve up there. mine was extensively damaged from spinal cord injury, and i have the very same sensations you are describing right in the very same areas as we speak too.

while this IS the ulnar nerve you are getting this from,it really needs to be tracked from those fingers all the way up to the c spine, just to really 'see' where it is being affected at. considering just what you have been doing lately, you could have suffered some level of injury to your neck area or exascerbated an actual issue up there that was just already there but non symptomatic til 'something' triggered it? just obtaining an MRI on your c spine area would be the really best place to start actually looking for the underlying problem. it would at least rule it in or out, then you can move onto other possible areas of involvement. since that nerve runs from the c spine on down to those last two fingers(it actually innervates the pinkie and only one half of that ring finger), it could be compromised in a few possible areas(the shoulder and the elbow would be the other possible areas,or most likely). but doing that MRI first really may save time. like i mentioned above, this is just a matter of tracking it back to the source.

i would just make another appt with your doc and simply ask him to refer you for that MRI. do not settle for only a CT, it wont show enough detail like an MRI would as far as what you really need to be seen down to the nerve/cord level. i do wish you luck and hope this is not a huge problem. but it does need to be checked to right where it starts. please keep us posted. Re: Finger Injury

thnx alot. since it was only my finger hurting I never figured it could potentially be something this big. I made an appointment today with my dotor for tomorrow and he will then send me to the specialist in the hospital where I will definately stand on getting that MRI then. it has been over 9 months now so I want to find the root of the probem. simply taping up the finger aint doing it for me.

also I cant remember any back or neck injury or pain at all ever so I hope it has nothing to do with my spine and or neck but I will get it checked out and keep you up 2 date.

thnx alot for your 2 cents.

hope your own situation is going better.

Gee
