Have you gotten an x-ray since the fall? It's possible that the bone is actually cracked. My dad has a femur rod from his hip replacement, and a few months back, he crashed his bike and actually managed to fracture the femur WITHOUT displacing the rod. If the rod did shift, an x-ray would show that very easily.
Or, it could just be you have a deep bruise in the muscle. But in any case, removing the rod is a substantial surgery. One fall does not necessarily mean it's necessary to take the rod out.
