Unhappy Options for treating fractured trapezium??

Fell 12/15/11, small fracture of Trapezium was not diagnosed till 12/30/11. I am in a hard wrist splint with thumb keeper now only removed for showering. Should I give in and get casted? If so, how long should I expect to be in a cast? Or is the splint a safe option and will it heal as well? I am concerned because I am supposed to go diving in Mexico in 3 weeks.

I have pretty much come to the realization that diving is out but still would love to be able to get in the water. - I would much prefer to go the splint route if it's safe, but I play a lot of golf, work out, etc. I don't want complications - it's my dominant hand.

Re: Options for treating fractured trapezium??

This is tough to answer as current X-ray is needed to show how healing is occurring. Assuming you got a X-ray initally you would know if it was displaced or not. If you reduced activity level and avoided exercise or activity splint might be decent at best. If you fell hard enough, got hit in the hand hard enough, lifting upper body should be completely out of the question. There is a host of things that could delay healing if they occured. Casting would assure nothing happens. Considering it is your dominate hand my vote would be cast it and not risk complications that could lead to surgical fixation. Just my thoughts. If casted upon injury 4-6 weeks is healing time.

Best of luck!!!
