Unhappy neck pain and stiffness- can't sleep help!

I've been having terrible stiffness and pain in my neck (the back and sides) for about 3-4 months now. I can't turn it left or right without pain or discomfort. I got an MRI and the doc said I have two small bulging discs that didn't seem that bad. I went to another orth doc to get a second opinion. The doc sent me to a rhumatologist to see if I have arthritis, but the tests came back normal for that and also he tested me for lupus which also came back negative as well. Also I was tested for any nuorological problem in the office by doing things like walk on my tip toes in a line etc... which also was negative.

The worst is trying to sleep at night because as soon as I lay down my neck starts to feel uncomfortable being in a position for a few minutes like it's tired and then after a few minutes when I get up my neck feels really stiff and there is horrible pain. After being up for a minute I feel some relief. I have tried a million types of pillows and sleeping positions. I found the most tolerable position but I want to know what the heck is going on with my neck. I'm getting another MRI done this week because I asked the rhumatologist for one. I'm going to take it back to my ortho doc to look and see if anything has changed since the last. The strange thing is my neck got much worse soon after the last MRI in December. I have also gone to Physical Therapy and that has not helped at all in fact it got much worse for a while and then I stopped it because it wasn't helping. Is there anything else I should get tested for? I'm 37 and healthy otherwise. How can I go from being normal to this much pain? Please let me know if I should see a different type of doctor or any tests I should ask for? It's very depressing.

Re: neck pain and stiffness- can't sleep help!

You might want to take a look at the "Spinal Cord problems" board where most of the members with cervical spine issues post. I'm sure someone there would be able to help you. Without knowing what your MRI showed, it is difficult to say anything specific, but in general, a bulging or herniated disc can and does cause the types of painful symptoms you mention.

Depending on its severity, you may need a course of physical therapy and/or a steroid injection as a first step in treating your issues. An orthopedic spine surgeon or a neurosurgeon would be an appropriate specialist to see for your bulging cervical disc problems.
