Question Bursitis and muscle spasms

I've been suffering from bursitis for about 6 months. It was about 3 months before I saw a doctor. The pain had become so severe it would wake me at night and I couldn't roll over at night. I had to use a cane for everyday getting up and down. My GP prescribed a metrol pack and muscle relaxers and it improved but as soon as I went off the meds, it came back with a vengeance. My GP sent me to an orthopedic surgeon, who diagnosed it as bursitis and gave me a cortisone injection. I didn't get much relief at first but after a few weeks the pain had subsided. Then a few weeks ago, it flared back up. I went back to the doctor and got a second injection, hoping if we caught it early, it wouldn't get so bad. I was wrong. It's been excruciating and in addition, I'm having severe muscle spasms which almost take me down. The bursa hurts like the devil and I'm having shooting pains down the leg. The muscle spasms are in my lower back and buttock. I've called the doctor's office again and they want to start physical therapy - just a couple sessions, they say- but I just don't think they understand the severity. They finally told me to take 800 mg of ibuprofen 2-3 times a day but after a week of that, it isn't better.
I would welcome anyone's thoughts or experiences with this.

Re: Bursitis and muscle spasms

Hi. Where is your bursitis? I have 1 in my right foot (metatarsal) between 2nd/3rd toes and have just discovered 2 more bursitis in my left foot. All diagnosed on ultrasound. It is extremely painful and honestly I don't think the doctors appreciate how debilitating this can be. I was wondering if your bursitis is pushing on a nerve which is causing your shooting pains etc. Insist on referral to another specialist and another scan. I have found as a patient that you really have to push your doctor for what you want.
