Unhappy Sprained ankle

I sprained/rolled my ankle 4 1/2 months ago. I finally went to the Dr. yesterday because the pain has really been bothering me lately and it's still swollen. He put me in a walking boot, and while it's ok while I'm in the boot, when I take it off in the evening my foot and leg ache so much. I still work and am on my feet all day. Is this normal?? I had xrays and he said it wasn't broken and may need an MRI in a couple of weeks if it's not better. Is this pain with the boot normal and what will an MRI tell them??

Re: Sprained ankle

Hi rubysox.......
Can't help you in regards to the boot as I have never had one. However, I had initial x-ray and ultrasound when I sprained my ankle in June - not much showed up. Then physio and when that didn't resolve it after 6 weeks, had MRI and another ultrasound. New ultrasound showed up swelling (tenosynovitis) and MRI shows up everything that an x-ray can't in regards to soft tissue etc. Mine showed a lot of things that not even the person who wrote the report picked up on, but once I was referred to a Foot/ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon, he knew exactly what he was looking for - plus he got me to get a weight bearing x-ray on the ankle as this shows up more than a non-weight bearing x-ray. Definitely get the MRI done if you can. I got mine done 3 mths after the initial sprain.
