Sprain - Hot or Cold after 1 Week?

Hello,

Sprained my big toe a week ago and it hurt and swelled up. I've kept off it as much as possible and ice it several times a day. Some swelling has gone down and I can walk on it a bit more. The ball of my foot is still quite tender.

Should I keep putting ice on it several times a day or start to put a heating pad on it?

Thanks

Are you sure it isn't turf toe? Maybe broken? If turf toe, it should be warmed up (soak in hot water, heating pad, etc) and then pull out and up and down. If it's broken it shouldn't be moved.

Re: Sprain - Hot or Cold after 1 Week?

Don't know for sure. Have to wait til 2013 to see the doctor...insurance. Don't think it's broken. Got it wearing no support shoes walking up a hill and it bent up too far. Had this before and it got better but this time it's worse. Ice seems to help but the cubes pushing on the side of my foot and top of my toe doesn't feel that good.

Thinking after a week maybe I should be using something else. I can move my foot up and down where I couldn't for several days. Can move the big toe some but if I force it, it hurts so I think I need to wait for that a bit more.

P.S. I looked up turf toe and it sounds like it could be what I have.
