I wrapped it with waterproof bandages that I have left from previous foot surgery.

Likely cause is a sprain and they can take quite a while to heal but next time you are at the doctor ask him to test your serum uric acid. There is always the possiblitlity of a gout attack for unexplained pain in the foot.
