I would imagine that it all depends on the location of the fracture. I fractured my right hip shortly before Christmas. I had some pain in the hip area, while walking, about a week prior to the actual fracture. I most likely had a micro-fracture at that time. When the break went completely though the bone, I couldn't lift my leg or put weight on my leg. The pain was in the groin area more than anywhere else.....and it was a pain I will never forget! I couldn't get in or out of bed or walk without assistance. My husband had to take off work to be my "nurse" for a couple of weeks.
I was able to get around with crutches after that and have only been walking without crutches for a week. I should also mention that most patients with fractured hips do have surgery. My ortho doctor elected to go the "conservative" route so I had no surgery or hardware. The fracture had started to heal when I had the MRI so he felt that it would be better to see if it would heal without hardware because my bones are in such bad shape. He won't make any promises that I won't have to have surgery later on down the road but everything seems to be healing nicely.
Someone else will have to address your spinal fracture question. I have back pain, but as far as I know, no fractures.
