Anyone familiar with I.V. biphosphonates? - Osteoporosis Message Board

Hello - I went to see an endocrinologist who is suppose to be the top in her field in our medical center. I paid out of pocket as I look at it as in investment in my future. My insurance does not cover my osteo. Anyway, she said that forteo is an option even though I am pre-menopausal, they are changing the way they use this drug since it came out 2 years ago. She also spoke of I.V. biphosphonates which I am not familiar with, anyone heard of these and how are they tolerated? I already had x-rays, need to go back for bloodwork and urine testing before she sets up a treatment. The cost already scares me but I wanted to know if anyone else has heard of this I.V. drug? I tried Fomamax for two years with no success and horrible joint pain. Thanks.....

I have heard about it but haven't used it. I believe it is similar to Fosamax and Actonel - the results are about the same, but you only have to go get it done 4 times a year instead of taking a pill once a week (or once a day.) I don't mind taking the pills so I haven't pursued it.

Zometa is a biphosphonate which is given by infusion. It's used for bone cancer patients. I will be taking Zometa infusion someday to counteract the bone-thinning side effect of a breast cancer drug I'll be taking after menopause. (I'm 49) My oncologist says it's safer and more effective than Fosomax and you only get it once or twice a year. At $3000 a shot, I'll probably do it annually. Fortunately my Blue Cross has approved it for me so I'll only have to pay 20%...still, $600 is a lot to pay all at once.

Some people have reported side effects like flu. See thread below titled "Zometa" posted by Paulineg.
