Questions I should ask my Dr? - Osteoporosis Message Board

Hello All,
I am only 35 and I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia. I believe it is a result of taking depo-provera for many years. I am seeing an orthopedist in a few days for another bone scan. I realize I should ask for blood work to see if there could be another cause. Are there other specific questions I should ask? I have been reading the different threads and there seem to be a lot of treatment options. I want to make sure I address all of my options with the dr. before making any decisions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would make sure and ask for all of the standard osteoporosis tests to see what the cause is. There's someone else on the board who knows more about these tests. If there's something specific that needs treatment then you'll know. I would suggest getting some treatment though because it's much harder to grow bone than to prevent the loss.

You should do a blood test for PTH (parathyroid hormone which controls how calcium being taken or stored in the bone) also calcium and vitamin D levels.

First see what tests and treatment options this orthopedist suggests before asking for any specific tests, etc. After he tells you what tests he is ordering for you, then you can ask for any additional tests he doesn't suggest that you feel you should have or would like to have.
