Long Term Care Insurance

Due to me having Osteo, Penny and I deceided to check out long term Care insurance. This is a policy that pays out a monthly income if the insured is disabled. Of cource rates, and monthly payouts are determined by age etc.
Here is what is really interesting about Osteo. Just like any insurance policy, you can be declined insurance if you have pre-diagnosed conditions, like heart problems etc. In the case of Osteo, you can still get coverage if your bone density is better than -2.5. I was told that I could obtain coverage, if my density got better to -2.5. Seems the insuance industry has set that number as good enough that you are not too much of a risk of a big payout.
So I have a real good reason to hit that mark.
Long term care is not cheap when or if you are disabled from something like Osteo.
Something to consider for those of us who have a chance at getting coverage now, before our condition eliminates the possibility of coverage.
We went ahead with the long term coverage for Penny, and will look at me in a year. Hopefully, the Forteo I just started, will by then show a good result.
I am not a big man, and Penny said she has no problem thowing me over her shoulder, if it ever came to that, but why not plan ahead if we can.

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

These insurance companies make me so mad for excluding medical conditions and/or putting a limit on it such as you mention. Common sense should dictate treatment for all conditions, no exclusions for pre exisiting conditons. If your bone density is in the severe range you can't get medical coverage because all they think about is money, not the person not receiving coverage. Even though you most likely will need expensive medications like Forteo and several DEXA scans. What do they think the premiums are supposed to pay for??

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

Taape
Do you know what is coming next!!!!
The insurance industry is looking very, very close at genetics, and heriditary type conditions. If, in your family history, all of you have heart conditions, and or say brest cancer, the industry is looking at your children, and grandchildren for the associated risk factor of them getting the condition.
I believe the day will come, when a condition of life and health insuance will be a DNA test. The test will look at DNA markers that show a disposition to get certian conditions, like Osteo, Heart, Cancers etc.
Medical science is a wonderful tool, when we are on the helped end of that science.
I posted the insurance item on the -2.5 benchmark to help those who have not yet reached that insurance cut off mark.

Re: Long Term Care Insurance

You have to remember: insurance is a gamble. Its based on you betting you will need it and the insurance company betting your won't. Naturally, if they are going to play the odds like that they are going to utilize every tool they can to reduce the odds of their having to pay you anything or at the very most only have to pay you what you have paid in in premiums (and that, hopefully, after they've made some interest or investment monies on those premiums you paid). After all, they are a business and businesses are into making money, not losing it.

And NO! I am NOT an insurance fan. As far as I'm concerned it is a necessary evil!!!
