There's a new osteoporosis drug in the works - it is different from the parathyroid hormone drugs and from the bisphosphonates. It will be administered via a twice yearly sub-q injection. It is in clinical trials that are comparing its safety and efficacy not only against a placebo but also against the bisphosphonate, Fosamax! That sure beats clinical trials comparing a new med only to a placebo!!!

The name of this drug is denosumab. It targets a protein that acts as the primary signal to promote bone removal. Studies so far indicate denosumab leads to significant improvements in cortical and trabecular bone density, volume and strength.

Thank you Chronie Too! I am here just so frustrated trying to figure out what to do after next month when my doctor won't let me continue on the Forteo. Do you have any more information that you are allowed to post about this? Like how far along the clinical trials are? Thanks

No Problem... If you Google "Denosumab" there are over 21,000 links/articles on it if you want to read more about it. The only thing I can't find is any hint as to whether the testing will be completed soon. I'm taking Forteo now, but my Dr. is questioning it because of a "slightly" elevated serum inonized calcium level, so who knows if I'll have to look for something other than that to take. I don't want to take biophosphonates anymore.
