vitamin d deficient

My dr had recently said from my blood work my pth level was high and that i am vitamin D deficient. He wants me to take 400 International (sp??) pills
3x's a day. In my last sono of my thyroid it also said possible considerations "parathyroid andenoma". From what i have read about parathyroid andenomas is that they always have to be removed. Has anyone been vitamin d deficient and the supplements have worked???
Any input would be appreciated on this
thanks
Jennifer

About ten months ago an untrasound revealed that I had a parathyroid adenoma. So far, my endocrinologist has just wanted to monitor it, doing an ultrasound every few months (to see if it is changing shape), and twice he has done a needle biopsy on it, but the results were negative. He doesn't want to remove it needlessly. The web says that 1 in 10 people have these "solitary thyroid nodules", and indicates the various criteria which would indicate they should be removed (size, malignancy, etc.). As long as he's not worried about it, I'm not worried about it.

Hi Pika: My endo told me almost the exact same thing, but about 2 thyroid nodules I have. I've had 2 ultrasounds in 6 months and they haven't changed in size. I haven't had the needle biopsy yet, because there is some concern about the location (near carotid artery) but I will have that done after the next us. I was told that if the nodule is under a certain size you can wait and watch it. Mine haven't changed in size, and he doesn't think it's necessary to remove it unless it was malignant. Of course I don't know that yet but I will shortly. He also doesn't think it has anything to do with my slightly elevated ion calcium level either. Anyway just thought I would mention the similarities in what you were told about parathyroid adenomas and my throid situation.

Hi Jenn: Did your dr tell you that you had to have this removed? Does your dr think the low d and elevated pth is from this adenoma?

I wouldn't want to have something removed unless it was absolutely necessary, which they could determine from a biopsy. Just a thought about possible pre-op testing that could give you some info first before having a surgery.

Re: vitamin d deficient

hi desertstorm
well went to the endo and he believes that the parathyroid is enlarged due to being vit d deficient and it is making the parathyroid work harder. I will take the vit d supplements and have blood retested in 4 weeks and in 8 weeks have another sono to see what is going on.
So not thinking about any surgeries for now, thankfully.
I am not having any symptoms from it either.
jennifer
