osteopenia

I was diagnosed with moderate osteopenia like a year and half ago. I want to say that i panicked in the begining then now i'm not worried anymore. I know I won't break apart. Actually I did fractured my ankle last year but really the way i falled anyone would have fractured that chip of the bone. The bone in the ankle recovered very quickly. I tried all calcium supplements available and have stopped them all because they all give me bad reactions so I lost hope in them. My body only likes natural calcium from drinking milk, eating cheese, yogurt, eating brocoli and so on. So I have decided to only do that. I joined a gold's gym two months ago and I'm doing heavy weight training and i have to say that omg i feel so good now. I can feel my body changing and I'm getting really strong so I'm certain i'm on my way to cure my osteopenia. I really just want to recomend to anybody, specially the young diagnosed with osteopenia. I actually really joined to get in shape but i really love weight training and now i'm obsessed with going. I want to be reach the 40's and still look hot. There is nothing like a going to a real gym and doing weight bearing excersice there folks. Next year I will request a dexa and see how i have gotten better. I'm planning to get pregnant next year so that will give another good boost to my bones.

Re: osteopenia

Hi Nightangel! I so admire you for taking a stand and going for weight bearing exercises now while you are still young.

I would be doing weight bearing exercises right now if I weren't sitting here healing from surgery and bone graph on my Fibula bone in my left leg. I'm asking myself how did this happen to me? I've always been very active and very strong. Only medical problems are Rheu. Arthritis and Osteoporsis and I thought I had a good 'hold' on those two. I'm asking myself how did my bones go down hill so quickly. Still searching for that answer.
As soon as I am released to walk again I will be doing exercises daily. I can hardly wait.

Re: osteopenia

Manny maybe you had a genetic predisposition for osteoporosis? How old are you?

What i question is whether my low density is what I always had since born or if this something that came new when i hit my 30's? I know I did took accutane and that can affect bones but doctors have said 4 moths of accutane are not enough to cause bone damage. But i do know my body went downhill after i took that acne drug.

I weighted myself and i have gained 3 pounds and i know it's in muscle mass because my belly isn't getting any fatter. I hope some of this have gone to my bones

Re: osteopenia

Hi Nightangel: Good for you doing the weight lifting, that will really help, and like you said make you feel great. A lot of people have trouble with calcium absorption and stomach probs so it's good your getting it naturally. My Dr is one of the ones that thinks that calcium from diet is more efficient than supplements, but I know how hard it can be to try and get enough from your diet. I'm only getting calcium that way and just constantly try to increase the things that are calcium rich. Luckily I like almost all of the things that have it, except for sardines

Good luck with your regime...

Re: osteopenia

See one of the things i do to increase the calcium is in a glass of milk I add a couple spoons of dry milk to it. I too love calcium rich food.

I'm doing bench press of about 60 pounds and leg press of about 100 pounds. (In Jan I could barely lift the olympic bar of 45 pounds) So I am definetly doing progress. I want to have a dexa scan at the end of year and see if the T-scores has improved. I'm really curious.
