I know what you mean! I've read that Calcium citrate doesn't need to be taken with food so I switched to that. Apparently, it is broken down before it enters the stomach. That was a blessing since we go out for dinner a lot and saves me from hauling out my pills.
I take liquid Calcium citrate which has 600 mg per tablespoon. They say you shouldn't take more than 500 mg per dose but the woman at the health food store told me 600 wouldn't matter. So I take 2 tbsp a day without food and my vitamin pill has 200 mg in it. That gets me up to 1400 and I figure my food gets another 100 to make 1500mg per day.
