New Bone Research

The University of Cambridge released some new research that may change the way bone disorders are treated. For years researchers believed that protein and other molecules were responsible for the restructuring of bone. During this study the role of sugars on bone growth have come to light in the importance of this process. Most treatment used today for osteoporosis and osteoarthritis were based on this older theory. Read the link below that explains this new finding and how it might affect the type of drugs that are used to treat many bone disorders. If bisphosphonates were marketed on this old theory things may be changing on the treatment front. It also sounds as if it will change the type of testing that is used to check for bone growth through bone marker tests which are used to measure collagen, not complex (GAG/PG) sugars.

Re: New Bone Research

DesertBloom-Thanks for the heads up. I read the article and it sounds like the researchers are going down a different trail. My brain cannot however decipher the implications. When I finished reading the article, I felt glad that the researchers are still on the job and maybe there will someday be something out there to help those of us who are in need. Big need. If they are now thinking sugars rather than protein, what does this mean do you know?? Also after I read the article with its reference to glucosamine chondritin , I wondered is now the time to start taking g.c. if I hadn't taken it before? Are you taking it?My x-ray shows OA in the spine .
How is your oral healing coming along? I hope that you are doing well. Did you ever get your hands on the research article from the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial ?
I did see that you finally received the Tai chi dvd . Hooray. I believe you said it was a little tough to do but are you having any luck with the first short segment? I just did that for awhile. And, I do have another idea for you, Qigong Beginning Practice dvd by Garripoli. I have seen the Qigong dvd at Target , Borders and Dalton booksellers-so readily available compared to Coles. I would suggest checking the library first for this or even netflix. I really like both tai chi and qigong alot , they have been my lifeline when feeling submerged by osteo and thyroid stuff. When I get awayfrom the practices for a few days because of other things- I really feel the difference- mostly on an emotional balance level but also on an ease of movement feeling. I didn't know where to put these comments exactly, so reply as you wish- maybe separate thread if you want to talk at greater length about your experiences with the dvd- I'd love to hear how you are and how you have done with the dvd .
On another osteo related matter. My doc told me a year ago because of -3.4 in the spine, do not bend over, twist etc. This gets to me, but I do want to protect my spine- I hope I have a distance to go yet with my spine- so I want to be careful. But it is hard. I know you have been told the same instructions. For putting on socks and shoes(tie shoes) I lay on my back on the bed and manage that way, taking care not to curl my back up by raising head , neck , shoulders but just mostly keeping spine straight in line with neck. Anyway, is this what you do? And, how about cutting toe nails- this is very hard. Same for you?? Did a phys. ther. give you any instructions that help??
Thanks again for the news update!I hope it means something good. And, I hope that the bisphos soon go the way of the dinosaur and that we have something better. I wonder if the research shows a flaw in the denosumab drug or the strontium aproach? I don't understand how it all fits together?? Do you think it is almost a given that when you finish with the forteo that you will be on a bisphos, or do you think something else will be there for us?
