How to get enough dietary calcium?

I've been eating a small container (8 ounces) of yogurt everyday since I found out that I have osteoporosis. I only like one brand of yogurt and just in the last week I haven't been able to find it any stores. I finally asked a store clerk who said that the company owner died unexpectedly and no one in the family wants to continue the family business. Now what do I do?? I guess I'll have to drink milk daily until I can learn to like another brand of yogurt. Is anyone else having this problem?

Re: How to get engouh dietary calcium

Taape: That's sad when a small family business disappears, especially since you really liked their product. Yogurt is certainly good for you and easily digestible, so I'd say keep trying other brands until you can find one you like almost as much as the original.
I don't know if you're eating it plain or flavored, but if it's the plain stuff (which I could never eat straight no matter how hard I try), maybe you could add your own ingredients (honey-sweetened fruit puree, maple syrup) to make it taste better. We just bought an ice-cream maker, and brands that I dislike because of their consistency are entirely different once they're turned into frozen yogurt. If you don't like milk straight, you can do the same idea by adding frozen fruit-and maybe a sweetener-and making a blender smoothie.
A naturopath I saw recently said it's definitely better to get your calcium from food as opposed to supplements. So try some new things-maybe almond milk or rice milk too-until you find something you enjoy .

Re: How to get enough dietary calcium?

I go way back to the days when we hippies made our own yogurt. So I just learned to love it, as a special treat. Of course we usually threw on some granola and possibly a little honey(scrumptious). So today I always buy the plain and add my own treats, such as a spoonfull of molasses(which adds extra calcium), a half bananna, or whatever berries are in season. Another benefit of adding your own accompanments is your not getting all the sugar-the commercial brands put in. I also make sure to buy yogurt made without the added hormones. Brown Cow seems to be a good brand-sold in most heath food stores, at a reasonable price.

Re: How to get enough dietary calcium?

Thanks for the ideas - I bought some fruit spread and I'm going to try and add that to Vanilla yogurt. I may try the frozen yogurt idea also. I wish I could eat yogurt plain but I just can't stand the taste.

I went to another big grocery store and found 3 cartons left of the other yogurt so that's good for the next 3 days.

Re: How to get enough dietary calcium?

I remember the make your yogurt days, in fact it was the first real food i gave our son. I have another idea for eating yogurt till you find another brand you like...how bout making smooties with it as the base. I put yogurt, fruit, flax seeds/meal, and whatever else i have to add in the blender. If you make more than you can drink it will keep in the fridge.
