Advair and osteoporosis

A few years ago my doctor put me on Advair for my asthma I started at a high dose and when down to the lowest as maintenance. Last year I saw an ad from Advair that stated you shouldn't be on it for prolonged period of time unless no other meds will work. I mentioned this to the PA (cause I NEVER see the doc) who said he and the doc never heard of that. Its safe. After being diagnosed with osteopena I read costersteroids contribute to osteo, Mentioned this to PA who said ?????. I asked to be put on different meds. They unfortunately dont work as well...Yesterday on TV I saw Advair ad that stated it can contribute to osteoporosis. OH WELL........too bad its the greatest for asthma...Think I'll see an allergist..........

Re: Advair and osteoporosis

The fact is that originally they did not think the steroid in Advair would cause any of the problems that the oral steroids cause. They are finding out differently. The warning you are talking about is because of the other ingredient which is Serevent and can cause increased heart rate and has been used wrongly by people when they have an asthma attack. It is not an emergency med. That is what caused the "black box" warning. Your Doctors should have known this. I would suggest that you see a pulmonologist first, have a pulmonary function test and get his take before you go to allergist unless you are pretty sure it is allergies. The new drug Symbicort is out now but it is almost the same as Advair with the same warnings and side effects. Frankly, if it works and you are on low dose it is unlikely that it will have much affect of your bones and there really isn't anything else to replace it that will be different. There are other drugs but they all have their downside. As someone with emphysema and asthma I am very involved in all these meds so I do speak with some knowledge. I think you do need more informed Doctors though.

Re: Advair and osteoporosis

Thanks,The allergist I used YEARS ago does do pullonary function tests. It is very difficult to get an appt with any specialist around here unless you can go mornings. I am lukcy they got me in at 1 and I only have to take a half day off.
The warning on Advair I was concerned about was the new one on osteoporosis,,and sissappointed that the docs did NOT know about this side effect.
Advair does work though. I just need to discuss this with a specialist. and Yes I do have other allergies.
thanks again

Re: Advair and osteoporosis

Several years ago my mother was prescribed Advair, but (due to her declining mental condition) she found it too difficult to use correctly, so her doctor changed the prescription to Pulmacort.

I have no knowledge as to whether or not Pulmacort (which is also a steroid) will cause the same osteoporosis-related effects as Advair.

Re: Advair and osteoporosis

Ithink they are all pretty much the same as far as side effects. Unfortunately with something like osteo it takes a long time before you know. I cannot take Pulmicort. Within 2 days I cannot talk it does something to my throat. I have the same problem with all the steroids but it is worse with Pulmicort.
