Vitamin D Defiency

I just had some blood test done. They said my Vitamin D level was 8. She said normal was 30-60. How bad is an 8. She told me to take some Vitamin D pills and recheck in 3 months. What can happen to you with low vitamin D? Does that put me at risk for Osteoporosis? By the way I am a 29 year female.

Thanks

Re: Vitamin D Defiency

Hi Fish: I too have D deficiency and mine is really close to yours it's 8.8. Vitamin D sends calcium to your bones so it is important to keep your bones strong. How much is your Dr recommending? Do you get any sun? Unfortunately there isn't much D in the foods we eat unless you eat fatty fish or fortified juices.

I would try to find out what's causing it and also if your calcium level is normal or not. My calcium is high so they won't put me on a high dose of D which is what they usually do if your level of D is low. I'm taking 2000 IU's a day and just had another test for my calcium and D. Are you also taking calcium?

Your level is considered marked insufficiency according to my lab which may differ from yours.

Do some reading on it, and see if you can't find out if there is some other cause, because it could inhibit your bones if left untreated, because it will alter the amount of calcium that gets to the bone. Let us know what you find out from your Dr.

Good Luck...

Re: Vitamin D Defiency

Hi Fish05! I have low Vitamin D too! Mine is 22 and ny doc says normal range is 30 to 80. So she thinks mine is pretty low for being 43 years old. Today I will pick up a prescription for vitamin D. I will take 50,000 mg twice a week for 8 weeks. She thought mine was low enough to do that. I am even going to have a bone density scan. So you definately want to get yours back up there. I don't know if you are having any weird body symptoms but I have had muscle twitches for months. I didn't realize that my level was so low and had been dropping for quite some time I imagine. I rarely have dairy because I am lactose intolerant and I live in a northern part of the country and we don't get sun like the southern states. That has alot to do with it. Good luck!

I eat a lot of canned salmon. That has a more Vit D than anything else. Canned sardines are high too. There's also egg yok, herring, trout, mackeral and tuna.

Re: Vitamin D Defiency

I am vitamin D deficient and am currently taking 50,000 IU's per week for 13 weeks. Will retest after 13 weeks. I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia and my doctor feels that the vitamin D deficiency is definitely a contributing factor. I would get your deficiency corrected while you are still young enough to build new bone. jrose
