Hi Hilda, welcome to the board

. First of all osteopenia is not a disease, it is a preconditon that tells you its time to start doing more to keep the bone density you have. Don't make yourself crazy over these scores they aren't as bad as you think and you have time to improve them. It's always scary when you hear the news, but there are many things you can do to help your bones and to keep from losing more density as you go thru menopause. Here are a few things in additon to the calcium/ D you are already taking that can help. If you don't have a fitness routine its time to get one that includes weight bearing exercises like walking, jogging, going up and down stairs, anything that uses your own body weight as resistance and to start weight training/lifting. The more muscle you have the stronger your bones are since its the pull of the muscle against that bone that helps keep the bones strong. Talking to a trainer or physical therapist can help you get started if your not already doing this. If weights aren't your thing walking is one of the best ways to help your bones. You'll also want to eat a good heatlthy diet that includes both dairy and non dairy calcium sources. You can find a list of them by doing a search.
I always reccommend reading the book
The Myth of Ostoeporosis by Gillian Sanson. It was very helpful to me when i was first dx. It contains much of the same info the other books have, but also offers alot of info that is good common sense that helps put it into perspective.
Like i said before, don't let this make you crazy, its a wake up call to make some changes and to be honest they are changes that will help more than just your bones. There are alot of good poeple here who will aslo offer their help. If you have any questions, please ask..someone will have an answer, words of support or what ever is needed. take care..phyllis
