Unhappy Regarding Forteo and midsection weight gain?

Regarding Forteo and midsection wt gain. I'm so glad I found this board. I've been concerned for months about gaining weight esp in the stomach/waist. I've been dieting, being very careful what I eat, but the weight keeps coming. In two days I will have completed the treatment and then I'm on to "reclast." Hopefully, I will then lose this weight. My question, has anyone completed treatment and had success losing weight?

Re: Forteo shots, midsection weight gain?

In response to your weight gain question, I was on Forteo and didn't really notice any gains, but then I am small and don't really pay attention to my weight because I pretty much eat healthy, exercise and don't limit myself. But in the first four weeks after I finished my Forteo course, my pants got loose and when I got on the scale, realized I had lost 6-7 lbs. without trying! I did have a good time putting them back on, and I like reading that they say it is a good thing to be a little heavier as we get into our later years!

Re: Forteo shots, midsection weight gain?

I've not found Forteo to cause weight gain for me, just that flabby roll in the abdomen which hasn't gone away nor increased since I quit giving my Forteo in the abdomen. I think it was more muscle tone than weight or fat. I'm well into my 3rd year on Forteo. I had GREAT improvment my first two years on it. But won't know until July or August what this 3rd year has done. I'm thinking that I'll either take a break from any osteoporosis product or go to an every other day regimen w/the Forteo. But we'll see what my endocrinologist and I come up with when I see him in May.

I can say that Forteo is one med I've been very happy with. One med that has done what they say it could do that hasn't also caused unpleasant side effects. And frankly, one injection a day was a welcome relief from having to pop yet another pill!

I took a vacation from my one Crohn's disease med and it was WONDERFUL while it lasted! Stopping that one med a day dropped 16 capsules from the pill popping routine! Ahhhhhh. So nice to just take 2 tiny immunosuppressive pills and 1 multivitamin w/iron tablet a day!!!! (Especially after 9-10 years of that 16 capsules a day!). But, have had some minor indications that it is time to get real and add those 16 capsules a day again. *sigh* The "vacation" sure was nice while it lasted!!!

Re: Forteo shots, midsection weight gain?

Hello,

This is my 1st time on this board. I am 58 and recently diagnosed with Osteoporosi (numbers over -3.1 on Bone density test for hips/shoulder etc). My GP wants to put me on Actinol but I have other things complicating me taking this drug:
1. I have Barretts Esophagus and very bad acid reflux to begin with and had a Nissen Fundiplication last May to try to abate the acid from entering my esophagus. I also have had procedure to ablate precancerous cells in my esophagus . My father died of cancer of the esophagus so do not want to go down that route. Actinol I have been advised contributes to acid reflux and esophagitis and also Necrosis of the jaw.

I am wondering if anyone has gone to a specialist that treat only the osteoporosis. I would love any information on Forteo or any information that you can provide a neophyte when I have my meeting with my GP regarding medications or treatment plans.

Any names of doctors that you are visiting especially in the New York area would be gratly appreciated.

Would love to hear from anyone.
Regards

Re: Forteo shots, midsection weight gain?

You definetly do not want anything in the same class as Actonel like Boniva and Fosomax. They are way too hard on the esophagous. I have the same problem and need info on Forteo. They have suggested the once a year infusion but I think the side effects are not that well known yet and jaw necrosis has occurred. They say it is rare and usually for people being treated for cancer but they also say get your dental work done before you start it so that doesn't make me feel secure and how do you know what you will need done. May I ask how old most of you are? Somehow it seems to me that age has got to make a difference in how it is treated. The other alternative is Evista.
