Vitamin D -- in the Boston Area?

Hi,

If anyone is in the Boston area and being treated for osteopenia or osteoporosis by a doctor who seems knowledgeable about Vitamin D - would you be willing to post their name? Is that allowed on this board? Some of the other Vitamin D threads describe doctors prescribing high doses of Vitamin D for a while to get the level up and my doctor doesn't seem to know about that. My Vitamin D is 35, which apparently is on the low side. I'd love to see a doctor who would know what to do about it.

Thanks!

Re: Vitamin D -- in the Boston Area?

Hi-I do not live in Boston. I have quite bad osteoporosis and have had low levels of d . In the course of my treatment, I did a bit of looking at info on vit d. Dr. Beth Dawson Hughes is the Dir. of the Bone Metabolism Lab at Tufts and a renowned expert in vit d. If I could have, I would have travelled to Boston to see her.Do a little research yourself and let me know what you think.

Re: Vitamin D -- in the Boston Area?

Ask your Doc. or search Internet about ONE ALPHA. This is the Vit. D active form which is more powerfull than the normal D3 supplement. It is available by prescription. Wildly used in Japan and Europe. Made by Leo Paharmaceutical or Leo Lab. another Brand is Alpha D. Medical name is AlphaCalcitriol (1,25 (OH). Also remember that all bisphosphonate drugs (Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva, et.) are catabolic i.e. reduce also formation of Osteoblast and therefore could diminish or cancel effect of more anabolic drugs like OneAlpha, Forteo or Strontium. An article in the Lancet, very detailed, explain this. Also for your info. Strontium is aprouved as a drug in Europe since 2004 (Strontium Renelate from Servier Lab. in France, Brand name PROTELOS). In the US it is available as supplement in the form of Stontium Citrate. Good luck!

Re: Vitamin D -- in the Boston Area?

Thanks for your responses. Sorry I haven't been on for a while. I did look up Beth Dawson Hughes at Tufts. I already had made an appt with an endocrinologist and it's next week. From there, I may decide to try to see Dr. Hughes. Also, thanks for the info about one alpha. I will ask the endo about that as well.

Thank You!
