confusion over magnesium

hi everyone, I have read that magnesium is actually more important in combating osteoporosis than calcium and I want to have optimal dosage
but I am having problems tolerating magnesium supplementation

in my calcium complex there is magnesium oxide 135mg ,since I take 3 calcium tabs daily I am getting 405mg of magnesium, which I didnt think was enough so I have been supplementing on and off with magnesium chelate 100mg ,but it gives me diarrhea

so I went to a compounding pharmacy , thinking I need a different type of magnesium , the pharmacist said its not the type of magnesium you take
but the bowel tolerance depends on the amount of magnesium consumed regardless of type..if thats right ..then I have reached my limit?
any opinions would be appreciated
thanks myth

Re: confusion over magnesium

Hi Myth...i did a quick search an read that taking too much in supplement form can/does cause diarrhea, but if you get it from food its not such a problem. This is a list of foods high in magnesium, with more searching you could find more. Maybe you could try eating more high magnesuium foods and take less in tab form. I take 500 mg. of magnesium a day in different forms and so far everyhting is fine. I do notice since i've been taking it i sleep much better, another benefit. For a long time calcium has been the big bone builder and now they are finding that these other vitamins and minerals are just as if not more important. Look at how much has come out about vitamin D in the last few years. take care...phyllis

Food Sources of Magnesium

* Pumpkin and squash seed kernels, Brazil nuts, Bran ready-to-eat cereal (100%), Halibut, Quinoa, Spinach, Almonds, Spinach, Buckwheat flour, Cashews, Soybeans, Pine nuts, Mixed nuts, White beans, Pollock, walleye, Black beans, Bulgur, Oat bran, Soybeans, Tuna, Artichokes, Peanuts, Lima beans, Beet greens, Navy beans, Tofu, Okra, Soy beverage, Cowpeas, Hazelnuts, Oat bran muffin, Great northern beans, Oat bran, Buckwheat groats, Brown rice, Haddock

Re: confusion over magnesium

Hi Myth...what is a compounding pharmacy? Can you go there and they'll make custom blends of things for you? You've mentioned this before and i always forget to ask.

Your right, it is hard to know exactly how much we are getting from our food. I am a label reader and unless you do exact portion control you could be getting more or less. I try to eat a good diet most of the time and depend on a multivitamin to make up the difference. A person could make themselves crazy trying to get just the right amounts of everything everyday. I try to do the right things, but am not hardcore. Stressing over all the right things to do isn't good for any part of you. Have a good day..take care...phyllis

Re: confusion over magnesium

hi phyllis,a compounding pharmacy is where you can get custom made medicines, hormones, vitamins etc...I have never done that though, I just go there for vitamins as they carry a huge range not available elsewhere

I buy an 'ultra clean omega 3' from there which is the only omega3 that doesnt make me burp and their vitamin D3 I buy is superior to most for absorption, given that I have had a good increase in BMD ,there might be some truth in that
although their vitamins are more expensive than most pharmacies/health food stores..... I think if you have to supplement its worth spending the extra money to get the best available ,as we know some of the vitamins off the shelf are not all that they are supposed to be (more filler than vitamin)

you are right stressing over how much vitamins/minerals you get from food could drive one mad, I dont even try to measure it ,just try to eat healthy
we have a saying here in aus.....'eat a rainbow everyday'
meaning the bright coloured fruits and vegetables have the highest concentration of vitamins/minerals,antioxidants and they should be consumed everyday and thats not hard to do
all the best
