T scores and Z scores.... need clarification

I am going for my dexa real soon and need clarification on t and z scores? I understand the T is compared to a young adults bone as in 30 year old.Would the Z be compared to one of my age which would make sense to me... If I am 55 I don't expect the bones of a 25 or 30 year old woman ... i expect comparison of my age group.

So the score they give you is the T score why don't they accept the z score as your number mine would be a lot lower but they they written severe osteoporosis of the lumber spine -3.2 my Z score would read 2.3 or less what's expected.

truly I should be just listening to z scores and not minding the T scores of healthy younger woman than us.... need the feedback from you before my Dexa next week but I will also ask my OP specialist my same questionf for peace of mind !!!! Let me know what u think

I think this is an excellent question! My numbers are like that, so I'm curious what the answer will be. It makes perfect sense to me!

Re: T scores and Z scores.... need clarification

It was the "Wards Triangle" score that bothered me the most when I got my first Dexa Scan report. My doctor said that this score didn't matter much but it was so much lower bone density that my spine or hip.

I think the important thing is that your previous scores are compared to more recent scores to see if your gaining bone density or not.

Re: T scores and Z scores.... need clarification

Hi Canna, i don't understand the scoring system either, but since it is used to measure desnity it all we have to go on. Anything over/under? -2.5 is considered "severe" osteo, which makes me wondered if -2.5 is severe, what would they label a -5? The only way for any of us to get truly accurate scores would be if we had a DEXA when our bones were in their prime and had our own scores for comparison.

Don't forget to tell your dr. and also the tech doing the DEXA that you have been taking strontium. It will make a difference in your scores. Let us know how it comes out, i know how hard you've been trying to get better bones. take care...phyllis
