Is medication the best way to build bone?

I know if a person needs to build some bone they can improve their diet and do weight bearing exercises. I know that will work for someone in the beginning stage of osteoporosis. But how about those with advanced osteoporosis?

If there are so many potential dangers to taking medications, why do people take them? Why can't they just eat a better diet? (For example: Collard greens, Bok Choy, Turnip greens and Kale.) And then do some working out with weights and walking.

Is it because meds are thought to be a quick and easy fix?

I think my bones are okay but I'm taking precautions by eating more leafy greens and exercising (brisk walking, weight lifting etc.) And I don't happen to think that meat and dairy products are helpful. Preagricultural humans had no dairy products but their bones and teeth were stronger than those of people living today. This has been determined through the study of fossils.

Hi John,

Vitamin supplementation is used by many here who have higher dexa scores. Calcium, Vit. K, Vit. D and Strontium are among them.

There are people who put all their faith in their doctor's advice and most doctor's are medication oriented.

Is it because meds are thought to be a quick and easy fix? Yes, this too.

For some people diet and exercise isn't enough, so vitamin supplements are added
You might want to also read the book The Myth of Osteoporosis

Cool Re: Is medication the best way to build bone?

Yes, the book ( Myth of Osteoporosis) was very helpful and put a different outlook on our so called bone problems. After reading the book I stopped taking Forteo. Now I am sure I have made the right decision.
I would suggest everyone read this book.

Re: Is medication the best way to build bone?

Thanks Kat & Jen for your replies. I'm going to see if I can get the book at my local library. I'm sure it will be very interesting.

How about calcium supplements with vitamin D? I know they are thought to help. Thoughts?

Re: Is medication the best way to build bone?

I think Vit. D is best taken by itself and D-3 is preferable to the synthetic D-2.

So in the case of calcium supplements that include D, it may be pointless?

No, not pointless, but the amount of D combined with calcium may not be enough. I guess it depends on the product. I take D drops - 2 a day equal 4000 IU. The product is Bio D mulsion Forte by Biotics. I think it is a very good product. But if you have a calcium product in mind look at amount and see if it would meet your needs.

Best,

Jen

Re: Is medication the best way to build bone?

Hi Kat,

I posted earlier the name of the product I take so you could do some research. It is a very high quality D and if you can take it in liquid form so much the better, I think, and have been told. It has absolutely no taste and you just put 1 or 2 drops in some water. If you decide to try it make sure you get the one that says "forte". There is a similar product, same name but without the added "forte" on the label and it does not deliver the higher IU.
