According to the instructions you should take it on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking something other than plain water.
So if your eating crackers in the middle of the night and then take the Fosamax in the morning you would essentially be taking it on an empty stomach.
Personally, I'd take it with something in my stomach because from the time I took the first pill my stomach was burning on fire, and I only took 2 more pills and stopped permanently. Later to find out that I had a stomach ulcer.
