Any one taking Forteo Injections?

Hi,
I started taking the Forteo daily injection last January and will take them for 2 years as I can't take any of the oral medications I tried and I have had several compression fractures in my back and had to have the vertebroplasty procedures done.

Just wondering if any one here has been on the medication and how they responded to it. Also any side effects like weight gain.

Thanks for any information you may have.

Re: Any one taking Forteo Injections?

Hi Gold Star Mom,
I'm on my second two years of Forteo. I can't take the oral medications either because of my stomach. I've also got compression fractures however the percentage of damage is small so my doctor has not recommended surgery.

The Forteo helped me increase my bone density however I don't know if it prevented any fractures. I didn't know about the fractures when I took this medication the first time. I haven't had any major weight gain that I can contribute to the medication. To me it's worth taking this medication. The problem is what to do after treatment.

Have you had your bone density tested since starting Forteo? Do you notice a difference in your posture, pain, or anything after having Verteboplasty ?

Re: Any one taking Forteo Injections?

Hi Taape

No I haven't had a bone density test yet, I think I was told at the one year point I would have one.
My posture isn't very good, I seem to stoop over some and of course I think that makes my stomach stick out more too. I live with back pain every day.
I can tell where I had the bone cement put in from all the fractures.
I don't know if that's why I have pain or not.

I have also read about having to have blood test done for your calcium levels. I wasn't told about that either. I have to get in touch with my doctor and see what he has to say.

I also take injections every day for MS, I take Copaxone injections which are very hard to take from the site reactions. But I don't have any problems with the Forteo injections as far as site reactions. I got very sick when I started the shots, so I take them at bedtime now and do fine. I have considered going to a pain clinic for the back pain and neuro pain. Just not ready yet.lol

Thanks for writing and best wishes to you.

Re: Any one taking Forteo Injections?

Good point - yes, there are blood tests/urine tests that are supposed to be done while taking the Forteo. Did you have any before you started the medication? You should have. I haven't the tests as often and I should but I will be going in more frequently to have these tests done.

I also have chronic back pain which is hard to deal with on a daily basis. My pain is from disc related problems not from the fractures as I didn't even know I had them until a recent xray was taken. It might be worth going to see a pain specialist at least to get some recommendations.

I'm glad you found the best time to do your injections with the least amount of impact to you. Let us know how your doing from time to time.
