Just Diagnoised with Severe Osteoporsis

I went to the doctor about 6 weeks ago with severe neck pain, arm numbness, etc. I was diagnoised at the time with arthritis in the neck and a pinched nerve. Was given a nerve block and returned to the doctor 2 weeks later, at that time they finally decided to do a bone density test, my t-score was -3.7 in the lumbar, and -2.9 in hip and femur. I am scheduled to see a specialist next week. I was also told things like do not fall, do not let my hairdresser bend my neck back in the sink to wash my hair as if done wrong could paralyze me!!! I am scared and do not know what to expect from this diagnosis. I was wondering if anyone could give me some info as what to expect from the doctor as well from this diagnosis. What can I expect from severe osteoporsis and DDD

Re: Just Diagnoised with Severe Osteoporsis

Hi skyview, welcome to the board . You've had a rough couple of weeks, and there is really no simple answer to address the things that your are dealing with. What is DDD (degenerative disc disease)? Since you are going to see a specialist next week, maybe you could wait and see what he has to say before making any decisions. The pain you are experiencing and the dx of osteoporosis are 2 different things and will be treated differently . In the mean time try to get a copy of The Myth of Osteoporosis by Gillian Sanson. Its a very informative book that will explain all aspects of osteo. Also, start writing down the questions you want to ask the specialist.

Not falling is the key to avoiding fractures and good body mechanics will can help with daily movement. Good balance it important and can be practiced. Exercise is important, but wait till you talk to the dr. so he can advise on what is safe with your osteo and other problems. Walking is good. Lastly, try to relax, and know that there are plenty of good people on this board who will be happy to help. take care...phyllis

Re: Just Diagnoised with Severe Osteoporsis

Yes the DDD is disc disease, and thank you for the encouraging words. I am anxious to see what the endo doctor has to say. I had a total hysterectomy 25 years ago and have not been on any hormones, so I am sure that this will be an issue for them. My neck (spine specialist) said that I really need to get in right away with this specialist and now he thinks the neck injury is osteo related. Not sure what to think, will just have to wait and see. Again thanks for the encouraging words, its just nice to have someplace to go and sound off.

Re: Just Diagnoised with Severe Osteoporsis

Hi skyview, you must be an early riser too. When all of us were first dx with osteo we were just as scared as you are now. But like anything else, once you get used to the idea, learn what you can do to help it and make the necessary changes it gets much easier. With time it will be just another part of who you are and not the main focus of your day. Bottom line is that you are still the same person you've always been and can do all the things you enjoy.

Is the part of Iowa you live in flooded? Have a good weekend and keep up posted....phyllis
