Preparation for Dexa Scan

I have read that one has to stop calcium supplements 48 hours in advance of a Dexa scan. This is of concern to me because my parathyroids barely function, and I take 1800 mg. calcium citrate and Calcitriol, which is a Vitamin D prescription.
Does anyone know how long calcium circulates in your body? Would stopping for 48 hours have repercussions, such as tetany, twitching and other symptoms of low calcium levels?

Thanks,
Mary

Re: Preparation for Dexa Scan

HI Mary, the best thing for you to do would be to either call your dr. or the lab where you are having the DEXA and ask them about the 48 hour rule and your condition. They would be the best equipt to give you a correct answer. You don't want to impair your health, but then again you want to get an accurate scan. I was also told not to put on deodorant the day of the scan. take care...phyllis
