Osteoporini? - Osteoporosis Message Board

I had a full body scan for osteoporis last week, the Doc said I may have osteoporini, not sure of the spelling of this one. Can anyone give me some info on this condition as I won't be getting any results from my scan for at least another week.

Mag,
You have osteopenia, which is a condition between osteoporosis and normal. It means your bones have lost calcium, but with treatment and exercise you can probably reverse this trend. Good luck.

I have been diagnosed with osteopenia also (for the last two years) from the dexa-scan, which is a bone-density test. I don't want to take drugs!!!! I'm trying to take extra calcium in my cal-mag-citrate vitamins, eating calcium-rich foods and doing weight-bearing exercises along with walking as much as I can. Any other ideas?

Have you had a recent dexa-scan? I'm wondering if your scores have gotten better with just the calcium supplements and the exercise. I've been taking Fosamax for six months now, in addition to 1000 mg of calcium and walking two miles a day, but the insurance company won't pay for another dexa-scan until two years after the first one.

Albedo, I don't know if this recent dexa-scan (taken this month) has better scores than the one I had two years ago. Unfortunately, I have only started the calcium supplements on a regular basis during the past couple of months and bad knees (& arthritis) kept me from a strict exercise regime. Now that physical therapy has improved my legs & a new dietary approach has eliminated the arthritis more physical activity is happening. I'm resisting taking drugs because I am not convinced that they can be of benefit when taken on a long-term basis and all the side-effects scare me.
