Post Fractured a Vertabra

I am 49 years old and 6 years post menopause. I have never used estrogen, but I have used natural progesterone cream for one year, and I have been diligent in using calcium/mag supplements and also colloidal minerals. I have had seven children, which I have read contributes to thinning bones, and also an early menopause. About six months ago my dentist compared my current x-rays with those taken 10 years ago and said my jaw showed some bone loss. Two weeks ago I fractured a thoracic vertabra, and the only unusual thing that I had done was that I had visited a chiropractor for neck stiffness. He did some pretty hefty "bone cracking". After that I started to get pain in the upper back, which got bad. I went in to Dr. and they took an x-ray and saw a mild compression fracture, but the thing that shocked me was that he told me that my bones looked osteoporotic on the x-ray. I am going to have a BDS next week, and from there, I don't know. Now I feel as if I am walking on eggshells, that if I move the wrong way I might break a bone. How on earth are you supposed to exercise when your bones are fragile? The Dr. says that it could have happened spontaeneously as easy as for the chiropractic "adjustment", that it is impossible to know exactly what fractured the bone. My back is getting better each day, but it still feels sort of weak and gets sore by the end of the day. An ice pack works well. Is there anyone our here who has had this type of fracture and what can I do to prevent it in the future? I will write back.

i have osteopenia..which is the precursor to osteoperosis....fortunately i have never had a fracture of any kind..but i have read quite alot on the subject of bone loss...and one of the articles i read said that no reputable chiropractor would do any manipulation on a person with bone loss..ofcourse i understand that your chiro did know..because you didnt know...which indicates to me that your dr wasnt doing such a good job of managing your health..you should have had bd scan years ago in my opinion...weight bearing exercise can rebuild bone ..i walk on a treadmill every day..to find out what exercise might be right for you..try call a local hospital ..lots of times they have osteoperosis clinics or programs that educate people on both exercise and diet..also you mite want to start reading up on fosamax, actonel, and evista..all are said to stop bone loss in post menopausal women...good luck

I was diagnosed three years ago with osteoporosis due to early menopause, I blame my obgyn for not getting me a bone density test sooner than that. I always thought they do that during perimenopause but she waited til i was 2yrs post menopause to have it done, a little late since I never took HRT or anything. i also had a fractured vertebrae in the thorasic area and once it started healing I got myself into walking on a treadmil 30 to 40 minutes 5 days a week. Doing strength training 3 times a week. But be careful I fractured a vetebrae while doing strength training, using weights much heavier than I should have. Excersise, calcium supplements and getting on actenol has been my regimen for the last year.

Well, it looks like we're all in the same boat! I have osteopenia and have been avoiding taking drugs, but it looks like my time has run out. Two weeks, after a serious bout of hay-fever, I sneezed so often and hard that I think I fractured one of my ribs. It hurts when I breathe in deeply and sleeping is difficult. I'm scheduled for X-rays tomorrow and hope it provides an answer. I'm going to start taking Fosamax, as much as I don't want to...... but the alternative (continued bone loss) is too bleak!

Nancy, Hi.. . I was just curious whether the actenol has improved your T Scores or have you had time to observe that? You said just one year so maybe not enough time yet. My T scores were -1.3 in the femur so I'm trying desparately to keep it from getting any worse. Gave up wine, coffee and never miss a day of exercise unless it's just impossible. What are the side effects if any of actenol, if you don't mind sharing? Thanks a bunch BG
