sore throat or fosamax? - Osteoporosis Message Board

Here is my problem, been taking Fosamax for 7 weeks, no problem, until this week, developed a sore throat and difficulty in swallowing.Doctor says, don't stop Fosa, probably ordinary sore throat. Merck's hot line says, could very well be a side effect. Pharmacist says could be side effect. If Fosamax is continued could get worst. Who do I listen to? My thinking is stop for two weeks and try again, does anyone else think this is the way to go? Appreciate your input!

How uncomfortable are you? My symptoms got worse day by day. Listen to "your" body. Trust "your" instincts.

Finally, after a few months of very debilitating symptoms I was sent to a gastroenterologist. He told me to go off it for 2 weeks and see what happened. In 2 days my symptoms started to wane and after a week were gone all together. Would I ever go back to that drug? NO WAY!

Many of us on this board have opted for the drugless route, but that is something each person must decide for themselves.

Hi, I have to agree with you. It sound very wise to get off of the fosamax for a couple of weeks. Your doctor should have advised you to do it, but since he didn't you should follow your own advice. That is really the only way to do it. If you stay on it and it is causing the throat problem, it will get much worse. Hope this helps, good luck.

I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis and my doctor told me to take Fosamax. After reading all these posts I am not going to take it. Instead I have upped my calcium, increased weight bearing exercise, stopped drinking caffeine and other soda and started using a Natural Progesterone cream. The cream is supposed to balance hormones and build bone. Go to *********.com and read more about it.

Hi all, appreciate your replys. My throat is still hurting, stopped fosamax this week, hope it clears up soon. Hate to give it up since my t score is low -3.3, have to do something, prior to this took calcium and did some walking. Didn't help scores went lower anyway. Will step up exercise, but I don't want to get any worst. By the way lots of negative stuff on progestion cream on Dr. Mercola's site. Who do we believe.
