Need suggestions for osteoporosis treatment - suffering with bone(back, thighs pains

Hi all,

please share ur valuable suggestions regarding the treatment for my mother who is suffering from osteoporosis. she is experiencing from

- severe back pain
- thighs pain
- not able to hold objects which are more than a pound
- not able to sit on hard surfaces
- not able to sit for more time (for more than half an hour)
- suffering more with bone pains

she is suffering from Osteoporosis from more than 7years. Recently our doctor suggested her to take Forteo once a month.

she is presently using Risofos(35mg), Rootcal(two a day), thironorm(125mg, one a day)

please advice me whether she need to take any additional medicines with Forteo. after starting the usage of Forteo with in how much time or days can we expect a bit of relief.

Also kindly let me know if there are any side effects, while using this.
Also i heard that Forteo is a bit expensive, is there any alternative for this.

Re: Need suggestions for osteoporosis treatment - suffering with bone(back, thighs p

It's good your mother is seeing a doctor, is it an osteoporosis specialist? I'm being treated with Forteo plus taking Calcium supplements, and exercising, and eating dairy products. The medication works for me and I don't have any side effects. The good thing about the medication is it is injected so it's not pills which you have swallow which can irritate the stomach. Forteo doesn't work real fast, growing bone takes years to grow. But hopefully the medications can prevent any further bone loss while increasing bone density. I'm not sure what those medications are you listed however she should discuss medication options with the doctor.

I don't think there is another alternative for Forteo which is cheaper yet. There are clinical trials of Forteo as a patch you put on your wrist for 20 minutes per day. I'm just assuming treatment would be less expensive than injectable medication.

Do you know if you mom has spinal or other fractures that is causing the pain? Or other bone or back condition causing pain that could be treated. My osteoporosis doesn't cause me any pain luckily but I feel for her being in so much pain.

Re: Need suggestions for osteoporosis treatment - suffering with bone(back, thighs p

Thanks you very much Taape for your reply.

i am from India. my mother is seeing a doctor here and he is an orthopedist.

she is suffering from osteoporosis. does an osteoporosis patent usually suffer from bone pains? or there can be any other reasons for this? we are not sure whether the root cause for these pains is osteoporosis or not? please share your advice.

a recent x-ray of my mother doesn't show any fractures in her back. her pains are increasing day by day. our doctor advised her to take forteo once a month for 2yrs. we are planning to start taking forteo.

also she is suffering thyroid problems.

if you dont mind, please let me know if there are any doctors in this forum related to this problem.

It's really good news your mother doesn't have any fractures. Some of the osteoporosis medications can cause painful joints and bones, has she been on any medication for osteoporosis during the last 7 years? She could ask for a referral to a Rheumatologist to check out the bone and joint pain. Has she been checked for arthritis?

I don't know anything about Thryoid problems but hopefully someone will come along with information for you.

yes she was on medication for osteoporosis from more than 5yrs now. we have to consult a rheumatologist too. i think she was checked for arthritis. can you please tell me the symptoms of arthritis, and how these symptoms are different from osteoporosis.

Re: Need suggestions for osteoporosis treatment - suffering with bone(back, thighs p

It's possible the osteoporosis medication she was on in the past is causing the pain but I'm not a doctor so I'd have her ask about that when she sees the rheumatologist.

I have some arthritis and from what I know the symptoms are inflammation and pain in the joints. Stiffness first thing in the morning or anytime if you aren't very active or don't take medication to reduce the swelling. It's possible to have it in one or more joints. Even though I have spinal fractures I don't have any pain with them.

I think there might be an arthritis board at this website you can check.

Re: Need suggestions for osteoporosis treatment - suffering with bone(back, thighs p

I am not a doctor. However, you could never get me to take osteoporosis medicine, and I wouldn't advise it for anyone. The side effects can be awful. I keep my bones strong by NOT using dairy products. Calcium supplements are helpful if they are 2 parts calcium/1 part magnesium. Too much magnesium can cause diarrhea. Daily exercise is good for bones; just a short walk is good. Lots of leafy green vegetables and nuts are good sources of calcium.

What you don't eat is just as important as what you do eat. DO eat: fresh, organic meats, fruits, and vegetables. DON'T eat: dairy products, soda pop, sugary foods and drinks (including fruit juice), caffeine, processed food, or anything high in phosphorus.

I've done lots of research on this, since I'm at "high risk" for osteoporosis, menopausal, light-boned, sedentary, etc., yet have managed to keep strong bones (95% density) by doing the opposite of what the medical community tells me to do.

Vitamin D deficiency can cause bone and muscle aches. Taking 2000 mg of Vitamin D3 every day is usually a good idea for everyone. Deficiency in D is very common in a lot of people, no matter the age.

Hi Argg,

Thank you very much for your valuable suggestions.

can you clarify me a small thing, you saying to leave dairy products like milk. but doctors prefer milk alot as it is rich in calcium.

i am fearing a bit these days regarding my mom's body pains, as she read some where that these bone pains are also caused due to some bone factures. but her xray report does not show this. have you taken Forteo for your treatment?
have you sufferd with severe bone pains like my mother, or do you know any ne who is suffering or got cured from the same one?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000227

This is a link on Forteo. I've never taken it or any other osteoporosis medication. Other drugs have been linked to bone death (necrosis) in the jaw.

There is a huge myth about milk in America. Yes, it's full of calcium, but that calcium isn't readily absorbed into your bones unless it's raw. Most milk sold in American stores is not raw, but pasteurized and homogenized. This makes it acidic and harder to digest. It can actually leach calcium out of your bones instead of making them stronger! That's why my bones got stronger after I stopped drinking milk.

People in countries that use little or no milk actually have stronger bones. Lots of Africans don't drink milk and they have very strong bones. People who eat healthy, organic diets have less risk of osteoporosis. There's also a genetic component (you can inherit it). But my mother has it, and I don't. She drinks lots of milk, and I don't.

I wonder if Vitamin D deficiency is causing your mother's joints and bones to ache? I had a lot of pain before I got my vitamin D levels back up to normal. Make sure you buy D3 supplements, and don't bother with prescription Vitamin D - it didn't work for me at all. But the supplements you buy in the store are quite effective - it got my D levels back up to normal, and my pain went away. Menopause made my bones ache, too. I'm on hormone supplements now, but not everybody can take those safely. Best of luck to you and your mother. It's hard to trust American medicine, I'm sorry to say. A lot of people have the same story I do.

Re: Need suggestions for osteoporosis treatment - suffering with bone(back, thighs p

Thanks Arggg.

can you tell me, is there any test specifically to know the D levels of your body. have you done any exercises during your treatment. my mother is not able to do any physical exercises. we went to a lot of doctors for her. some say its osteoporosis, some its osteoporosi caused due to thyroid, even some also say that she is not having osteoporosis, we are really confused why different doctors are saying different things regarding this. but we are trying to find the root cause for all these things.

initially she was treated for osteoporosis, after that for hormone deficiency, and now again for osteoporosis.

trying to find a solution soon.

are there any doctors in this forum, who can help me in this issue.

once again thnak you very much Arggg.

There is a simple blood test that can determine Vitamin D levels. I wish I could help you further. I don't know anything about thyroid problems. I wish you both lots of luck!

ARGGG, I got osteoporosis (T-spine -3.0, T-hip -1.9) and do not take any medications for osteoporosis. I eat lots of cheese and yoghurt and take calcium pills with Vitamin D. I never drink milk, don't like milk, never did. Your post about milk surprises me. I feel almost guilty for never drinking milk, therefore I make up for it by eating lots of cheese and yoghurt. My question is, is yoghurt and cheese also bad for osteoporosis??

Re: Need suggestions for osteoporosis treatment - suffering with bone(back, thighs p

HI ppn, yes your thyroid can effect your bones. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can have a negative impact on your bones. Too much or too little thyroid hormone can take calcium out of your bones. I have Graves Disease/hyperthyroid and feel my density loss is a result of that before being dx and treated. I have no other risk factors. Has she had her thyroid tested? Its a simple blood test that will tell her if she needs to have her levels adjusted with medication. It won't reverse the bone loss, but it will help keep her from losing more if that is the cause or one of the causes. take care...phyllis

Thanks for the reply Laura.

what is the medication you have taken for hyperthtyroidism.
doctors are suggesting her to undergo a surgery, but they are not giving the guarantee that this can be solved with the surgery to parathyroids. can you suggest us how can we go ahead in this issue. what you have done to come out of this. please help.
