osteopenia bi-lat hips pain w/sleep

I am 40 yrs old. My dexa scan shows osteopenia (very close to osteoporosis) in my left hip. My right hip isn't much better. I am not able to sleep on my sides anymore. I am not a back sleeper so I end up waking up in pain.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get a better nights sleep??

Re: osteopenia bi-lat hips pain w/sleep

HI, the first thing i would suggest is to see your doctor and find out if there is a reason your hips are hurting. Osteoporosis doesn't usually cause pain unless you have a fracture you don't know about. How is your mattress, does it need to be flipped over or replaced? Do you do any activities during the day that could cause hip pain? Do they only hurt at night or is that when you notice it more? When you wake up does the pain go away after waking around the house for a while? Hope it gets better soon. take care...phyllis

Re: osteopenia bi-lat hips pain w/sleep

I also have hip pain if I lay on my side especially a hard surface. I think it's maybe some arthritis/inflammation causing the pain not osteoporosis. I bought a tempurpedic overlay mattress to put on top of my futon, it works great. If it wasn't for nerve related pain I'd be able to lay/sleep on my side without hips hurting because of the foam. If you can't afford tempurpedic brand you could get some sort of memory foam to lay on or a memory foam pillow to put underneath your hips. It's worth a try.
