Calcium and Kidney Stones

DEXA in hips is -3.4 and I'm not taking any meds. I'm concerned about taking calcium supplements as I've read they can cause kidney stones. Are there any types of calcium without this side effect? If I consume the same amount of calcium through diet would this provide the same benefit as the supplement?

Re: Calcium and Kidney Stones

Have you had a blood test for your calcium? Before you take a supplement I would see if you need it. Food is almost always the best source of vitamins and minerals. Spinach and broccoli are good forms of calcium. Kidney stones are caused by too much calcium in the blood. The thing is that you want the calcium high in the bones not in the blood. If your calcium blood level is high, you might want to take vit K2. This vitamin helps take the calcium out of the blood and into the bones. Google the benefits of vit. K2 I am certainly not an expert, but this is what i have learned because I have a kidney stone and my calcium in my blood is a little high. My bone density in my hips was a little low last check. I am due for another bd test soon. Hope this info helps. LaLa
