Thyroid Meds

My TSH levels are high, and my doctor has prescribed Synthroid. I have severe osteoporosis and manage it with calcium, diet and exercise. Currently, I take no meds of any kind. Please share your opinion on thyroid medications and bone loss. Thanks so much.

Re: Thyroid Meds

Having thyroid problems, either too low or too high can mess up your bones. I was put on a ridiculously high dose of synthroid (200mcg/day) and wound up with a number of spontaneous vertebral fractures. Adjusting your thyroid to an appropriate level will definitely help your bones.

Re: Thyroid Meds

Hi texaschex, i am on total thyroid replacement and like turtelady said if the your dose is right for you than the bone risk factor diminishes. It may take a few tries before you find the right dose. I hope your doctor told you not to take your calcium at the same time as the synthroid. space them out by at least 3 or 4 hours hours. Taking them at the same time will prevent the synthroid from be absorbed properly. Its best not to take supplements at the same time. I take mine first thing in the morning when my stomach is empty. take care, phyllis
