What is too much vitamin D

My doctor recommended that I take 5000 mg of vitamin D daily. My body doesn't absorb it effectively or something---strange since I live in Florida and one would think the sunshine a good sorce. I read on line that this is far above the recommended dose. I take 1200 mg of calcium daily....any recommendations?

H Jrobinso, welcome to the board . Do you know what your D level is? Is is below 30? How long did he want you to take the 5000 mg. before being tested again? He may be trying to see how your body reacts to a larger dose and where to go from there. Is he ordering any other test to see why your body doesn't absorb the D properly? Sorry for so many questions, take care, phyllis

It sounds like I need to ask my dr some more questions. It is so logical but I guess we forget to ask the right questions. Thank you for taking the time to respond

Hi, what i do when i go to the dr. is have a list of questions in my hand when i walk in. If the see a list its easier for both of you to know what to talk about. Don't forget that besides the 5000 mg. from the supplement you also get D from food so you may be getting even a bit more. Did he give you a script for the D or were you told to get it OTC? Have a good Sunday, take care, phyllis

Phyllis, he told me to get it over the counter.

Re: What is too much vitamin D

Back in 2006 I was given a prescription for 50,000 I.U. (!) of D3/day. No one, not the pharmacist, none of the physicians by whom I was seen when hospitalized shortly thereafter, objected or, for all I knew, even took notice. As it turns out I diligently took the prescribed dosage for the better part of 1/2 year before my new bone metabolism doctor politely asked me if I were trying to commit suicide. Fortunately, no harm seems to have been done, but an important lesson in taking responsibility for one's own health decisions was learned. It is wise to question everything and research whatever you can.
Good luck!

I have been wondering myself - one doc says 1200 is good the other says 6000 !

Re: What is too much vitamin D

Hi, its the mega doses that can get a person in trouble since D can reach a toxic level. Some say a D level of 50 is optimum, my dr. tells me anything over 30 is ok. I guess it depends on who you are seeing and what their view is. Its the thinking "if little is good than more is even better" that can get people in trouble. And don't forget, that there is D in dairy and added to may items that will also increase your daily dose. Oh, talking to a pharmacist is also helpful when in doubt, its their job to know about the pills and the things we take. They are a great source of free informative info. take care, phyllis
