Is there anyone else who can't stand the feelings from vicodin or percocet?

I cannot stand the way vicodin or percocet make me feel. I guess it's what's considered a "high" feeling. I can't imagine why anyone would take things to feel this way on purpose. Or maybe I'm just extra sensitive to it. I used to take Ultram, and it didn't make me feel that way if I only took one, but did if I took two at a time. The problem was it took two to control the pain. I take Neurontin and find it helpful with nerve pain, but at times I need something more for back pain. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Is there anyone else who can't stand the feelings from vicodin or percocet?

Stillwater,

You are not alone. I can't stand the way hydrocodone or mepergan or any narcotic for that matter makes me feel. It either drugs me up, which makes me feel out of control or wires me up so I don't sleep at all

I also take Ultram, but when the pain is at a 10, I have to take the stronger meds. I haven't been able to sleep in weeks. I had a cervical fusion in May 2003 and then 4 weeks ago, got rear ended on the freeway by a drunk driver, which herniated another disc in my neck AND my back, plus I have degenerative disc disease. I never thought in a million years I would have this much pain on a daily basis.

I am trying to get in to see a new pain management doc, just waiting on my NS to turn in his referral letter to set up the appt. I would recommend you find a good doctor who will listen to you. I am going on my 3rd pain doc. The first one didn't even know my name, the second one never listened to me and eventually hurt me with all his needle procedures and blocks. When he started talking about the rhizotomy where they burn your spinal nerves and did a facet block without sedation, I high tailed it to my NS, who said under no circumstances was I to let that man touch my spine. I fired that PM on the spot and waiting to see the new one.

I am currently in PT. I take Ultram and Baclofen on work days. Take Zonnegran for nerve pain, one Soma at night, and have Lorcet/Norco 10mg to take as needed. Mostly, I just try to tough it out, but usually the pain wins out at the end of the day so I take at least one Lorcet a day, if not two, if the pain is unbearable.

Sorry for the long response. You don't hear many people complaining about how pain meds make them feel lousy on this board. It is refreshing to hear.

Re: Is there anyone else who can't stand the feelings from vicodin or percocet?

PsychLea,

Thank you so much for your reply. It helps to know I'm not the only one. I am so sorry you are in so much pain. You have really had a rough time, haven't you? I hope your doctor can find a way to help you.

I haven't had surgery yet. I have postherpetic neuralgia, following shingles last March, and the Neurontin helps with that. I have DDD, and spinal stenosis and spondylisthesis. Three surgeons now have told me I need surgery, but I've been trying to avoid it. I'm going to have to go ahead, though.

Take care, and I'll pray that you find some answers and help soon.

I feel like I am not 'myself.' The real me died the day I started on the narcotics. I feel like everything is underwater, and I do hate it. I resent not being able to be clear-headed.

PsychLea, how does the Baclofen make you feel? It makes me too spacey. You're the first person I've met who is on it, too.

Lily

Re: Is there anyone else who can't stand the feelings from vicodin or percocet?

Stillwater and Lily,

It is nice to know you aren't the only one, isn't it? I am up for another long night of pain, after a grueling PT where they tried some new traction that flared me up, but at least they are trying.

Stillwater,

Find you a good neurosurgeon to do your surgery or at least an orthopedic spine specialist and thanks for your prayers.

Lily,

It took me 3 months before I could take the Baclofen at work during the day. I started taking only 5mg when the pain got so intense it was either take something ot go home. I am only working 3 days a week now, so the meds won out. I eventually worked up to 10mg.They still make me feel spacey. All of these meds do. They also have a tendency to make me run into walls, make me nauseated, and repeat myself.

What a way to live, huh?

Hope you also find something that helps.
