Local doc arrested

Here is an example of a Ortho surgeon in my town that hasn't had hospital privlidges, mal practice ins and excepts no insurances for the last 11 years, just a cash biz for prescriptions since 94, He "listens" and lets his patients pick and choose their meds and dose.

Chesapeake doctor charged with prescription scheme in which 4 died

This was back in september and he continued to practice up until yesterday.

CHESAPEAKE — ******removed
........................................ ................................
This guy wasn't a PM doc, He was an Ortho surgeon that lost his licence, insurance and hospital privlidges for having an affair with an 17 year old patient and then marrying her the day after his divoivorce was final. He was 52 when they were married.

This won't effect local PM docs because he was not a PM doc. He was a well known soft touch with no ethics or morals and needs to be in jail where he can't harm anyone else or turn a patient with simple painful complaints into dependent repeat customers that pay cash.

Re: Local doc arrested

Hey Shoreline,

Hope you are doing well. I can't believe that!! I never heard anything about that, but then again I am in Canada, but still!! Well as far as I am concerned and like I have always stuck by is that if you take a life, your life should be taken!!! And IF they can not find him guilty of that then he should be getting life, but you know some of these Docs they get off real easy. Let's hope he doesn't!! I hope you are doing well. Have been lurking a lot lately and your posts are really helpful!!! Thanks Shoreline, you are a Godsend to so many people!!!!

Take good care,
M.S.

Re: Local doc arrested

If he had his license revoked then how was he able to sign for prescriptions for anything, let alone narcotics?? I thought if a doc loses his license then he is no longer a doc or am I missing something?

Re: Local doc arrested

Not so uncommon...
In my home town of Port St. Lucie, Florida, there was a female Dr. (Dr. Luiao - sp. is wrong but sounds like "LEW_E_OUH") she was a phillapeno dr. And by the time I was 17 back in 1996 I could get Oxycontin, perocet, Xanax 2mg, soma, Vicodin, the list goes ONN....and I'm talking I could get these from my slightly older friends because they would go to her. In this one case, my friend came down from Boston, he used to live in town then went to school in Boston, well he picked up a heroin habit up there, so he came home for escape. His aunt says, go to Luiao, she'll take care of you. She put him on 100mg's methaode a day, and he was ALWAYS high on it. And he kept going back and back and back, no tappering, she just kept writting it, and she'd do it a week early if need be. Well one day he looked at his chart and she had put on there he had fybromyalgia. And those words NEVER came out of his mouth. It was well know in town that if you needed pills just go to Luiao and she'll 'hook you up'. Needless to say many people in town O.D.'d and she was arrested. IN fact before she got arrested ALL the wallgreens in town or most of them refuesed Rx's from her and several other pharmacies, becuase the had a hunch she was crooked. It was a BIG thing there. She had a million dollar bail and this is so hilarious. After she got arrested on her office door was a sign that said....."gone fishing, be back soon". That was so priceless...I was in tears laughing. (her office was in a busy plaza). Also, when they arrested her they found TONS of bottles of pills, mostly Controled subs. from patients switinching medicine. the office would say you have to bring in your old pills to get a new RX. And they found thousands of dollars in cash all over the place. BTW, my friend died from too much of his methadone, she was already arrested from that point and his family never 'persued' anything towards her about his OD, but it's just sad. If she would of been pracitcal in ANY sense she would of weened him off after like 6 mths macks, but this went of for over a year with him. Money talk with people, and this Dr. knew exactly what it took for people to pay her...mood altering drugs. AND....jeeze this just goes on...the ER's in town where FLOODED (this was all in the paper) from her patients going through withdrawls when she got popped. It was Insane...if I can find a link about it I will edit and post.

In the mean time...."I'm going fishing"

Re: Local doc arrested

Sorry aboout the posting of a news story, mods. When he went to jail in 94 for 5 months his licence was susepended, He was charged or pleaded guilty to taking indecent liberties with a minor. While in jail he continued to have contact with the girl and married her when she turned 18. His licence was suspended at that time but he was able to get it reinstated about 2 years after getting out of jail, At the time his prescription practices were not being questioned, just his amoral conduct. But his mal practice ins dropped him because of the suite the parents brougt against him.

After that no hospital would allow an OS to operate in their OR without MP insurance so all he could do was consult and give second opinions. He never advertised himself or claimed to be a PM doc but was so notorious many pharmacies refused his scripts too.

When he was first charged with over prescribing the medical board put him on 2 years probation but he continued to arive drunk and write scripts and his wife would write them when he was too drunk to make it the office. He's facing 90 some federal carges and his wife 40 some.

He was a notorious soft touch and if you lived around here and ocaisonally read the paper or watched TV it was pretty hard to miss.

The funny thing was his atttorney claimed it would have a negative impact on all PM docs and CP patients would suffer, "all he was trying to do was ease people pain."

He spent no time while his licence was suspended studying PM and in fact wrote dozens off scripts for prolonged Demerol use which resulted in the death of one patient, Who had a seizure and heart attack. Most PM docs know you don't write Demi for increasing doses for years despite how much cash you pay the doc and despite how much the patient insist it's the only med that works.

Their won't be any chilling effect on local PM docs as he wasn't one. But the lawyer gets to play devils advocate and actually take our position in his defense which is even more disgusting. "people will suffer without comapssionate docs like him."

VA has very clear guidlines in prescribing opiates to CP patients as far as how to doument, contracts, one pharmacy, one doc, etc etc. This guy did nothing but listen to complaints and ask patients what combination of drugs they wanted.

Docs can prescribe while on probation, the only time he couldn't prescribe was the 2 years following his 5 months in jail for playing doc with a 17 year old, but who knows how long that went on, she had been a patent since age 13. She had been arested for illegally obtaining demi a few years ago and he's had one DUI after another, one of the charges was practicing medicine while intoxicated. They had him under survailance since june and removed liquer bottles from his office trash and his trash at home daily for months. Then he pulled into the driveway where the feds were waiting to bust him and he was drunk again so he got one more DUI charge thrown on top of the 90 fed counts of drug traficcing.

He truly was nothing more than a drug dealer, for a 300 buck consult and repeat 75 buck office visits you could get whatever you weanted. Thank god I never saw him even in my most desperate days. I didn't want my name in his files even back when my pain wasn't being managed.

Just be careful about your doc. If the practice looks shady and the folks in the office apear to have something more than physical problems going on, use your gut instinct and find a real PM doc.

Good luck, Dave
