I find it better without breakthrough med. - Pain Management Message Board

I've always had to take breakthrough meds,but with my new doc.I asked her instead of taking oxycotin 2x aday,and 3 lortab for breakthrough,if we could eliminate the lortab,and take the o.c 3xaday,and she said if i think i'd get better relief,we'll try it.Well,i am getting better relief,plus,i'm not taking as many meds.she's not writting as many scripts.And what my new doc. does with her patients she's treating for chronic pain is,at random,they will pick a patient,and do some kind of drug test to see if the meds. that are perscribed are in your system,wich i have no problem at all with that.

Basically what you have done is raise the level of constant medication above the typical peaks that you get of breakthru pain. Which is fine for awhile, but tolerance will catch up and you will be back at the point you were in awhile. If you keep raising it up to cover that peak, you'll end up on pretty high doses a lot faster.

Believe me, I wish it was possible to sustain taking it above that level and not worry about it and not have to increase it again & again. I hope you get lucky and get a long period of time out of that strategy, but I have a feeling in 2-5 months you'll be in the same boat again.

Either way, its a pretty good 3x a day drug. Hope it works out for you.
