Re: How many mg. of codeine is safe in a day?
It takes a lot of codeine to produce relief for severe pain and is used mainly to relieve mild to moderate pain. The duration for short-acting opiates is 3-4 hrs. and you should not exceed what your doctor prescribes. 200 mgs codeine is equal to 40 mgs hydrocodone and 60 mgs of morphine. Prescribing for pain is anywhere from 30 mgs. to 220 mgs. At doses of 250 mgs. adverse effects tend to arise, including itching, flushed skin, dizziness, sedation, nausea and vomiting. There seems to be a conflict when it comes to specifying a maximum dose. I have read where 128 mg. per day is a maximum dose and also that there is no maximum dose. No one seems to agree on maximum doseages of the codeine alone.
Does that help you?
