I was hoping that someone could help me out with questions to ask when I'm scheduling a 1st appt with a new PM DR.

My physiatrist gave me the names of 4 different PM specialists to try to see. Are there certain questions that would be appropriate for me to ask when I'm calling to schedule an appointment (other that how soon can I get in, which is important). I do want to know about meds but don't want to ask the wrong questions.

I'm currently in PT, MT, have done 2 treatments of IMS and will continue and am looking to buy a TENS unit. Am on 15-20 mg of hydro 3-4 times per day, Mobic 15mg per day and 900 mg gabipentin. So what I'm really looking for at this point is mainly someone to manage my meds as well as giving more treatment options, in addition to what I'm doing already. My physiatrist is fine with treating me but doesn't want to go any higher or stronger on the meds.

i think it is ok to tell the dr office why you are changing dr.I did this and some told me that my pain would be managed ,some told me that that they really didn't like to go higher than what i was on. If they know why you are changing dr they can give you a little knowledge on what that dr will do. Good luck let us know what happens please,kelsey1

i would just call and tell them that you are in need of a good PM who uses a wide variety of modalities in there practice and then ask them what there philosophy is overall about integrating modalities and meds.tell them that you are currently on a variety of meds including anti siezures and narcotic based meds and would they be able to possibly continue to use both types of meds in your ongoing treatment,as you find both types to be very beneficial and very important parts of your pain management.

i think stating things that way would get you the overall info that you would need to be able to make a decision.good luck,and i hope at least one of them is willing to work with you in the way you need.let us know how things go.Marcia

Thanks for the responses

I did get a clearer understanding after meeting with my psychologist this morning. The referrals I got are to PM Dr's that mainly manage meds. My other treatments are coming from my physiatrist so at least I know that my meds will be managed better I hope than they are now. I just need to choose one out of the four that I got and probably whoever can get me in sooner will be who I go with.

I hope I'm getting closer to ending the roller coaster that I've been on for the 2 years.

This board has been really helpful in my getting to this point.
