HELP My mom is in Pain and i dont know what to do?

Hi everyone I am seeking help fro my mom,
my mom is in a lot of pain, let me start by saying that from what I know she has buldging disks that are pressing up against the nerves and osteoporosis arthritis, and sciatica she has always been a very active person that loves to walk and has always worked hard. and now out of the blue the pain on her hips and lower back have her in bed a lot she can barely walk because of the extreme and sharp pain, plus the fact that she has a not so good medical insurance doesn't help since she does not seem to find a doctor to help her, all they have been giving her is muscle relaxers and tylenol and anti depressants, which she doesn't need since she has never really suffered from depression, but she has been a bit down because of the pain but no antidepressant will take the pain away, might help her mood but the pain is still there,I mean if shelooks depressed is because she is not used to lying around, and is in pain all day, but i guess some doctors just dont get it

she lives in NYC and I am in FLA, so its hard for me to help her much, plus her english isn't that great so I am not sure if maybe the doctors dont understand the kind of pain mom is in, anyway I am getting upset because she says that she thinks she will die from this pain, its that bad, when she moves and the pain hits her she breaks in a sweat, she thinks she can get a herat attack, and i am so scared.

I never really saw mom sick and she is now 55, I always remember her working and being so active, anyway I wanted to ask you guys if anything has helped your pain? I mean whats the strongest pain killer out there? I dont know much about this subject, but so want to help her, she will be coming next week and i told her to bring all her meds so I can take her to a chronic pain specialist, she just went to one in NYC and as I mentioned he only give her a muscle relaxer and pamelor an anti depressant, anyway i dont even want to mention to the doctor here in florida that she was given anti-depressants because some doctors instantly think its all related to depression. lf anyone can tell me what they have used and if its helped I would appreciate it greatly Thanks in advance for your help

Re: HELP My mom is in Pain and i dont know what to do?

Hi JennyVee, I think it's great that you are so concerned for your Mom and doing everything you can to help her! You're an angel I suffer also from low back pain from buldging discs and first let me put your mind at ease about the antidepressants. It is quite normal for dr's to prescribe them to patients who are in a lot of pain. My dr did it for two reasons. First I started getting depressed because like your Mom I could no longer do the things I wanted to do and two: because they do tend to work well with other meds for nerve pain. They will also help her sleep better. Bulging discs are painful and what works for one may not work for another. Physical therapy might be a good place to start when you get your Mom with you. I would ask about a tens unit also, they seem to work well for pain too. As for what pain meds work best I can't help you much as I don't tolerate them well. I pretty much take mostly motrin, but it really doesn't help much. The muscle relaxers should help. Resting seems to work best for me. I would be honest about what she is taking when you see the new dr's tho.

Others on the board may be able to help you out with the meds good luck with your Mom--she's very lucky to have you

Re: HELP My mom is in Pain and i dont know what to do?

Telling you which pain medication is the strongest isn't going really be of much value to your mom because she probably has not taken narcotics before so she probably wouldn't tolerate them. It is something that you titrate up to over a long period of time, not overnight.

The goal of controlling pain is not to give a patient the strongest med there is and hope it works but instead it is to give the patient the least amount of medication that is the most effective so there's room to go up from there.

Has she seen a spine doctor lately to see if her problems have progressed and to find out if anything like therapy or traction would be of benefit to her? If surgery isn't an option and other modalities have failed to work then the next step is for her to seek out a pain management specialist who will work with her in putting her on what meds would be appropriate for her situation.

When you do take her to the doctor it is important that the doctor knows she is on an anti-depressant. A good PM will understand this and know that chronic pain does cause depression and anti-depressants are generally part of the pain management protocol anyhow. Additionaly if there's any potential reaction between her medication and something he may put her on he needs to be aware of it.

Is your mom going to be living with you? If not what will happen when she returns back to Florida? The doctor in Florida will not be legally allowed to prescribe your mother medication if she is not living in Florida. He or she can prescribe it while she is there but not after she leaves which is why I ask.

Re: HELP My mom is in Pain and i dont know what to do?

Hey Jenny,

Sorry to hear about your mothers pain. Unfortunantely many of us here have suffered much pain and can probably relate to some degree.

I also agree with the other posters about pain meds and anti-d's. It is very common for a pain patient to receive anti-d's. Some actually work very well for chronic pain and nerve pain. As mentioned earlier, they also assist in sleeping as well as keeping the mood elevated. It doesn't mean that she is depressed. Many medications are used for more than what they are marketed for.

Pain is sometimes very difficult to treat. What works for some, may not work for another. Like Kissa pointed out, taking the strongest pain med is not usually the answer. In fact the strongest pain med would probably make your mother very sick.

Pain meds do work but also come with side effects. Mood alterations, constipation, histamine release, sedation, etc. It is important to understand what comes along with these meds. There are many ways to treat pain, and many times, a combination of things like PT, Steroid Injections, Massage, TENS, and medication work great. You don't want to limit her to just one option. And many docs are going to require that she trys others ways to treat her pain.

I also agree with the others about telling the doc. Trust and honesty is the #1 thing that has to be practiced when dealing with a PM doc or any doc for that matter. But PM's are under the microscope if you will. If you take her to a doctor, it is absolutely paramount that you tell the doc exactly what she is taking for her safety. Many times these meds can mix and cause oversedation, and increased side effects. So it is very important to disclose all information to the doctor.

It sounds like you have the best interest for your mother in mind. And it is possible that by adding an opiate med to the mix may help her out. But it really needs to be a complete plan with the doctor to establish what meds and other modalities of treatment are best for her situation.

Sorry this seams like a vague answer, but we can't tell you what will work for you mother exactly. What works for me, may not work for someone else and vise versa.

If you still want to know about pain meds as far as strengths, etc, I'd be more than happy to answer that question. But as the others suggested, I think it is important to figure out what will work for her case in particular. I think getting her to a doctor and coming up with a plan to treat her pain is the right way to go.

I hope everything works out for her. I know personally how bad back pain can be so I know where she is coming from and to have a family member like you that supports her and wants to help is great.

Hang in there, and let us know how it goes with the doc. Most of us on this board have been through it and it can become very complicated and discouraging when the pain continues. And to top it off, treating pain is in a league of its own.

Take Care.
