Has anyone tried this cream?

After I saw my new pain management doc earlier this week, he gave me a prescription for a compounded cream. Before I get it made up, has anybody every heard of this combination or has anybody every used it? Did it work for semi-superficial pain? I'm trying to get better pain relief for surface/skin pain that is pretty severe over my hip replacement, femur and lower back. Any thoughts? Thanks.

"DMS 0.5%, Dextromethorphan 10%, Gabapentin 10%, Lidocaine 10%, Marcaine 2%, Amitriptyline 5%, Diclofenac 5%, Cyclobenzaprine 5% in Anydrous base/PLO base."

What a cocktail, eh? All of this is to be compounded by the pharmacist and I'm to use 1 gram three times a day on my skin...over the parts of my body that hurt.

Re: Has anyone tried this cream?

Hi KathyMac,

I can't help with the cream as I have never used that before....but wanted to see if you want anymore info about the pain Mgmt. Dr. and surgeon I see in Northern Virginia...I wrote some info on your last post about you going to that new and awful Dr..

Again...I would drive many hours ( I think you would be less than 2hrs..) just to see them because they are that good and that caring....If you could have someone drive and go with you...that would be even better....

I hope that you can get some answers about the cream and if you can't travel to my area....then pray that you can get a more caring Dr. next time....

Blessings,
Ingrid

Re: Has anyone tried this cream?

I have. Actually mine is in a gel form and they can even make it in a spray which I like too. I get it from a compound pharmacy in Denver and my doctor actually has an opiode added to it as well. I found that it worked very well. Better than lidocaine patches for sure. I used it over the surgical site and also during prolo therapy injection sites which tear the ligaments up and which I can't do without the gel.

Give it a shot, it worked for me. And if not, see if your doc will consider adding the opiode to it, and that may be more affective!

Re: Has anyone tried this cream?

Hey Kathy, I haven't had to use that type of topical because the nerve pain I had was reither relieved by surgery or left me tiotoally numb after surgery, but I can look at each med and understand why it's used. The only drug I see missing is Ketamine which as alos used in topicals for it's NMDA blocking abilty which also helps nerve pain. Let us know how it works. I did have luck this weekend using a lidocaine patch on my foot that constantly cramps after standing for hours at my OT job. The spasm and cramps have me jumping out of my chair when I get home and a small strip prevented spasm in that one area.

Using those meds in this mannoer all make sense from a PM neruo point of view so it's worth a try. If it doesn't work for you, at least you gave it a shot rather than simply loking for an increase in meds that it doesn't sound like the new doc is too wiling to supply.

Good luck, and let us know how it works. People need to hear about other methosds that do help.
Take care, Dave
