I have major lower back pain, from a mid line tear somewhere, and 2 herniated disc. My dr originally wrote me Lorcet 10/650, Soma, and Mobic. It somewhat helped, but eventually the lorct began like after a week to get to where it worked but the pain was returning quite quickly, like after an hour or 2 of taking it. I told the dr about this, and he wrote me a RX for Duragesic 50mcg Patches. I have noticed NO RELIEF what so ever , just like its a dud or something. I told him about this and he wanted to up the strength of the patch, or told me if i would rather, he would change it to Ms Contin, 30 mg. I said ok. He told me this was long acting morphine, and that i could take it 2x a day. It seems to be workiing, but the pain still is re-curring, like 2-3 hours after i take the 1st dose. I seem no matter what med i ever take , Antibiotic, or anything, i get tollerant to it super quick. My dr was in a wreck or something, and the new dr taking over, said to stop all meds that he will have no dealings with these type meds, and does not prescribe narcotics for any reason, and under no circumstances. I am searching for a new Dr, that can at least tell me what to do, or refer me to someone who can help .. ANyone have any advise. THanks..
Please see a pain specialist. It was dangerous for your doctor to start you on 50mcg patches from Lorcet. You really need a specialist who can regulate your medication, and find a plan that works with your bodys specific needs. The patch just may not have worked for you. Morphine does that to me. It's like taking aspirin. I found a good pain doctor, and they have worked with me to find what does work. I would start there first.
Is this new doc letting you go cold turkey on your meds???
For sure keep trying to find another doctor. Butterfly gave you excellent advice so I just want to add that the doctor who doesnt ever prescribe narcotics could get in as much trouble as doctors who over prescribe.
One of the most important things that happened in the last 15 years for pain patients is that doctors started being sued for malpractice for UNDER prescribing for pain. The case I remember is a man that died of brain cancer with nothing more than tylenol 3's for pain, even though the patient and his family had begged the doctor to keep him comfortable, and he died in agony.
Pain medicine is an important tool, and a doctor has no right in my opinion to say that it is a tool he will NEVER use. If you arent taking your patients on a case by case basis, you need to get out of medicine and go work in a factory where everything is alike all day long.
Good luck and I hope you find the relief you need and deserve.
Hang in there!

THis dr is my Primary Doctor. I am going to ask about a referral to pain management, but the last time i saw him, he told me he wasnt referring me to another physician right now, because truth be known that with all the pain clinics in my little area that just got raided for all prescriing pain cocktails, that i would not get anyh help what so ever , for the drs fear of getting in trouble. So i dont know, i may have to travel like to houston or something, just to find a physician that is willing to help, and doesnt have rules before they ever see you about what they will not prescribe or what they do. I agree everything should be on a case by case basis, and any dr, like my one before this who tells me he honestly believes im in tremendous pain, but cannot prescribe narcotics, i will not see again. Either he cant because his license has been restricted, or he just doesnt want to out of fear of trouble. BUt i am in serarch of a DR who can help, and not one who just changes everything up on me and says, dont call the first time you have a little side effect, give it time. Well vomitting, diarrhea, mass pain, all that to me is grounds to stop a med if it is that bad,
THe dr taking over from the one who was injured, said to STOP ALL MEDS, and that i should have no problem stopping everything. That no matter what the condition it didnt warrant the use of narcotics, and that if things got bad, not to come to the office to go to the emergency room. But the emergency room referes you back to the Doctor, saying that they cant even prescribe some of the things i am on, and cannot treat me, that my doctor needs to fix this. GRRRRR. I think i hav located a pain management doctor close to me, his office says theyh would be glad to consult with me to see if they can help. He seems to be very reputable for helping people, i know he doesnt make a habit of writing out narcotics for everyone, and that is good, because surely not EVERYONE needs it, but at least if he feels the situation warrants the use of certain meds he does use them. and keeps the druggies away. thats good.
